    2.) A 24 or 26 year old young man who I knew for some time, who I thought was of good character, who I thought my daughter would find appealing and thought would be good for my daughter;

    Then I would choose #2.

    Notice the disparity in the descriptions. Not any 20+ guy is OK, it has to be a guy who I know, or believe, won't harm my daughter, will have good influence on my daughter, who my daughter would find attractive and who she would admire and have fun with and who could open her eyes to new experiences.

    I suppose the problem is allowing young girls to choose the 20+ year old guys. Now the issue becomes the criteria by which they're choosing such young men and the motives, and character, of the young men.
    When I was dating age, my parents trusted me to choose guys of good character to go out with. I did not let them down. The few guys I dated were usually 3 to 5 years older than I, and my parents could trust them with me. I think that much of it depends on the girl, and what she is looking for, and whether or not she will remain true to her own desires, rather than compromising.

    Absolutely. Modern youth culture is little better than the "blind leading the blind."

    The notion of "extended adolescence" is easily one of the most damaging in all of modern society.

    I don't disagree but there is a problem here - the network effect. Gathomas88 mentioned this upthread - where does a 16 year old girl get to meet 23 year old guys?

    I meet guys that age at work, at sports clubs, at the gym, etc. My social world has a broader base than what I see for most teenagers but I don't claim to be an expert on teenagers.

    Secondly, when we were dating was a different age. Sure, every parent of every generation says something to the same effect, but when the actual interpersonal dynamics between boys and girls changes so drastically that girls, in effect, become the pursuers, then we're in a different world and the problem which arises here is that teen girls are socializing each other and teen boys do the same, so parental attitudes, forged from their own experiences as teenagers, are vastly divergent from what is going on today.

    To the bolded:
    In my case, it was usually at work, at church, or hanging out with my friends at some of the college functions (sports, concerts, etc).

    The title of the thread, the question, and the OP are all slightly different. 16 for a female is comparable to 18 for a male. There are early bloomers and late bloomers but the vast majority of the time, a 16 year old girl is an adult and a 15 year old girl is a child. I voted 'no', but there are exceptions. There are many factors to consider. Some people have good intentions and some people have bad intentions. There's a lot of room for disagreement over what is and isn't good intentions, but there are some things that are definitely bad. If the guy OR THE GIRL is trying to take advantage of the other's naivete, that's bad, and the older one isn't always the one with greater street smarts. I asked out a 16 year old girl when I was 23, but I was madly in love with her and wanted to marry her. I also don't believe in premarital sex. She was extremely sweet and innocent, and that made her seem naive to some people, but she had a strong will and plenty of street smarts.

    If a girl is 15 or 16 years old, would you be OK with dating her, knowing she was only 15 or 16, if you were in your early 20s?

    Would that be OK with you?

    I thought that most men would not be interested, remembering the old "15 will get you 20" saying.

    But apparently I am wrong, according to one poster here, and most young men would be OK dating a 16 year old.
    I would not have, but I did date a 17 yr old when I was 19. A two-year difference is acceptable to me (at that age). Five years + is a bit much.
