Has the idea of transgendered children been taken too far? In this Globe editorial, it talks about how due to the more public knowledge of gender identity disorder, kids are being diagnosed with it when they really shouldn't be. Instead of seeing as a phase like most experts, parents and doctors view it as gender identity disorder instead of just a phase and begin the life-altering surgeries and treatments when it may in fact just ruin their lives. Most experts recommend just telling your son or daughter they are boy/girl and it will pass.

These days, parents who don’t like the slow-and-careful answer can shop for another one. Ms. Dreger is highly critical of what she calls the “hasty clinics,” which are happy to help a kid transition right away. “Parents don’t like uncertainty,” she says. “They’d rather be told, ‘Here’s the diagnosis, and it’s all gonna turn out fine.’” Teenagers can find fast help, too. Plenty of doctors are happy to help them out with hormone treatments just for the asking.

And in the hotly politicized world of gender politics, that makes him, in many people’s eyes, a dangerous reactionary. They argue that a child’s identity must be honoured, and that treatment should start sooner rather than later. They equate the watch-and-wait approach with the widely discredited practice of reparative therapy, which was a failed effort to turn gay kids straight. With the advent of powerful new drugs that delay puberty, the stakes in this debate are even higher. Start them early on puberty-blocking drugs, and their eventual transition will be easier. But which kids? What if you’re pushing them on a path they don’t need to go down? At what point do you start taking life-altering decisions for a child that will have enormous physical, social and emotional consequences?

Has the diagnosis of gender identity disorder in children been taken too far? I say if it is starting to harm children and scapegoat real issues it has indeed gone too far.

If it's happened once, it's happened too much. Kids don't have the capacity to determine this for themselves. Also, liberal medical professionals are too quick to jump to this conclusion. It's the same basis as to why antidepressants are abused and over-prescribed. Too many "Dr. Feelgoods" out there.

No, it hasn't. Considering who the article is written by I think it's just to scare people.

I really don't think surgery or treatment should be done to children, but it would appear that is where this issue is headed.

The Liberal media? Do you not think that children's lives are being ruined by over diagnosing gender identity disorder just like they do with other diseases? The problem with this is that once it has started it is irreversible and they don't even know if there is actually any issue.

The Liberal media?

Margaret Wente (born 15 February 1950) is a conservative American-born Canadian columnist for Canada's largest national daily newspaper, The Globe and Mail,

I'm hesitant to trust any article on trans issues written by a conservative.

I don't think overdiagnosing is happening.

And gender identity disorder is not a disease and characterizing it that way is disgusting.

A disorder then? Are you supposed to want to be a woman when you are a man? Is that the new angle? Oh right, they are a woman even if they need medical treatment to have something that looks like a vagina, grow breasts, have the bone structure of a female(if done to children), and not have a deep voice, facial hair, a penis etc. Right right..

I keep forgetting the complete and utter nonsense liberals spew.

They aren't men.

You're learning!

There is always something to learn, friend. :)

Not when people are trying to pass off a male as a female because of surgery and hormones there isn't.

There is lies you can get away with, and then there is transparent lies. What you're arguing involves the later.

Being treated with respect and recognizing someone's identity should not hinge on whether someone passes or not.

No lies. Only a refusal to learn on your part.

I accept people for who they are.

If I had to guess you're running on the brain chemistry argument. If you understood that argument however you would quickly discover it doesn't help you at all.

So what's the rule. If I want to be acknowledged as a dinosaur, should I growl and show my teeth to everyone? Will everyone run away and fear me? Will Tokyo attempt to stop me from destroying it?

Don't forget dinosaur hormones. The earlier you start the better.

Nah, you impose your binary thinking on them.

I'm certain you are far more familiar with it than I am.

Yeah sure this doesn't sound vacuous at all.

:lamo Oh yes, that 50 genders nonsense. The nonsense that keeps on giving.

I'm certain you are far more familiar with it than I am.

I'm certain of that as well. Finally something we agree on.

Just because you keep exhibiting the inability to fathom something outside what you think doesn't mean it's nonsense.

I'm certain of that as well. Finally something we agree on.

You certainly haven't posted anything to that affect yet.

Really to any effect actually.

Mostly your posts have been "nuh uh"

But the idea of some dude wanting to lop off his twig and berries and prance around in a dress is so mundane that it's trivial?

He actually inverts it, but it's not that important really. It's still funny people call that a vagina either way.

Not really considering the person in question is not a dude. And, for that matter, of what consequence is it to you?
