    I would urge everyone not to simply vote for their own country's anthem out of patriotic pride, because then the poll will be very, very boring.

    We can all agree that there are some pretty cool anthems out there, at least give it some real thought -- and if for some reason, you haven't heard the Marseillaise or the Star Spangled Banner, at least check them out before voting.

    Also, please explain why you chose which anthem you chose -- do you like the historical context, the musical piece, the inspiring lyrics, what? I'll freely admit I'll be disappointed if every American chooses the American anthem because it's American, or every Brit chooses the British anthem because it's British.

    There's no national pride at stake here -- feel free to vote however you like (or, write in an answer if you don't like the options).
    The Deutschlandlied because its hilarious. The full version.

    I see nothing about Beethoven donating the song to Europe in his will. Are you making things up?

    I see a group of people sampling the patriotic hymns of various nations and giving and honest opinion of their preferences.

    I was very objective with my analysis and still find the United States national anthem to be one of the better ones even though I do live here. The music of the United States National Anthem is preferable to the other anthems mentioned. You can accused me of being blindly patriotic if you wish. I'm just not seeing any evidence of that happening in this thread.

    Re: Best National Anthem?

    Waltzing Matilda has never been Australia's national anthem, just a folk song based on a German melody. Our national anthem is Advance Australia Fair.

    Lyrics

    Advance Australia Fair

    Australians all let us rejoice,
    For we are young and free;
    We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
    Our home is girt by sea;
    Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
    Of beauty rich and rare;
    In history’s page, let every stage
    Advance Australia Fair.

    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.

    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
    We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
    To make this Commonwealth of ours
    Renowned of all the lands;
    For those who’ve come across the seas
    We’ve boundless plains to share;
    With courage let us all combine
    To Advance Australia Fair.

    In joyful strains then let us sing,
    Advance Australia Fair.

    Re: Best National Anthem?

    There are a few different anthems in the UK, whilst 'God Save the Queen' may be the official Anthem, in terms of English sporting events both Jerusalem (England Cricket) and Land of Hope and Glory (Rugby and Commonwealth Games ) are used, whilst 'I Vow to Thee My Country' is also popular.

    In terms of Scotland, the National Anthem is 'Flower of Scotland', with 'Scotland the Brave' and 'The Thistle of Scotland' also being popular, whilst in Wales 'Land of Fathers' is generally recognised as the National Anthem.

    'I Vow to Thee My Country' - Cecil Spring Rice & Gustav Holst

    'Jerusalem' - William Blake & Hubert Parry

    Re: Best National Anthem?

    Of course the most important nation of the United Kingdom has an anthem that is unrivalled in its poetry, philosophical depth and blood-stirring emotion. Honestly, what other nation would have an anthem that is a paean to cannibalism and millinery?
