But it is very difficult to listen to your own anthem without a lot of patriotic sentiment. I think it is very very very hard to honestly do so. Your anthem/flag are very close to your heart, or that is my experience.

    or something like that.

I guess I'm a little biased because I learned to sing the Israeli National Anthem in Hebrew. The English translation of Hatikva is a very vivid description of the resurrection of modern day Israel. Israel has the most amazing story out of any nation. If you are an atheist this is especially true. Israel created Yahweh and the concept of monotheism. Israel disappeared as a formal nation for 1,878 years but yet still survived through the breathe and life of it's people. To those of us who are not atheist, this is even more of a miraculous resurrection than it is to the atheist. It would be most challenging, daunting and overwhelming to write a national anthem worthy of such a nation yet Hatikva does capture the legacy of Israel.

On a related note: I have heard many people suggest that we change the national anthem of the United States to Toby Keith's, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue". Just a suggestion.

The USA, Russia and Canada has the best music in their national anthem.

Germany and Israel have the most powerful lyrics.

I think you should run this poll again in a few weeks maybe at the end of the Olympics. Then narrow it down to the top 4 vote getters in this poll. It's just a suggestion.

The Haitian National Anthem sounds like a love song.
The Mexican National Anthem sounds like a circus ride.
The Georgian National Anthem sounds pretty awesome.
The Denmark National Anthem sounds like Mozart.
I'm sure the Pakistani National Anthem would be really catchy if I knew the language.

I listened to a lot of these national anthems. This thread was a really great idea. Thanks Ad_Captandum. This thread is awesome.

The original Soviet anthem (AKA the Internationale) is my favorite of all time.

    Re: Best National Anthem?

I voted for the Soviet anthem. Strong song. The red army choir is fantastic too.

I like the Canadian anthem as well, and the British. After that, the French and the American anthems.

Best use of an anthem in a movie. British in "Chariots of Fire" when Harold Abrahams' Coach is in the hotel and hears God Save the King and knows Abrahams has won the Gold Medal
The Hunt for Red October, when the crew starts singing the Russian anthem is pretty powerful too.
