Sounds like you are saying you don't support the concept of equal rights regardless of who benefits from it. Is that accurate?

No, I think he was saying that he does not agree with the concept that equal rights requires gay marriage to be legal.

I was trying to get at a fundamental flaw in his logic. Changing laws so that they are no longer discriminatory is not a new concept.

Government just needs to get out of the manage business, no tax write offs, no licensing, then people can marry whatever or whoever they want and to keep government off churches if they do not wish to marry anyone but straights. So yes remove marriage laws completely.

I'm not sure if he was referring to "equal rights" as a concept or as a law.

Just like other races wanted "equal rights" in the 60s? After a Supreme Court case they finally had to remove the "Thou shalt not marry a white person unless you're white" laws. But, hey, by your standards I'm sure even that was still "equal rights". Anyone could marry inside their own race - what's not equal about that? :roll:

If god were a homophobe, why would he create a "mistake", being all perfect and such..unless..he isn't perfect...and doesn't exist.

But the concept of equal rights as motivation to change law should be consistent. So if he is okay with changes to law that have been made in the past which are rooted in the concept of equal rights then his issue with its application to this law change is really about his own prejudice.

Not in most states. And in many states it's still illegal for gays to marry - which includes civil unions. I guess you don't live anywhere near the Bible Belt, huh?

No. I was impressed that the candidate was a bigot both towards those who were homosexual as well as those with autism.

Doesn't work that way. Marriage is mainly about creating a legal kinship between two people. We track all kinships, whether done by birth certificates, adoption records, birth records themselves (before there were actually birth certificates), or now DNA test results (although these can be overridden by certain court rulings or overriding legal documents). There is a reason that our spouses' relatives are known as "inlaws". They are recognized as family members because of the legal kinship established by marriage.

Marriage is about legal entitlements and inheritance rules. Originally for the elites and the rich, since the serfs had nothing to inherit.
