Simple question really do you think Russia can control these games? Given the preparation, suicide attacks and threats can the Russians control this?

I hope so but they better have a pretty good evacuation plan to.

My answer is no due to the fact there has already been attacks and the Russians historically don't like to work with other nations when it comes to security.

I don't know, but I sincerely hope that there won't be any serious incidents at the Olympics. I'm not confident, however.

I hope it won't be in any way like the 1972 summer games. Hard to shake that thought when contemplating what's going on with Russia right now.

I hope so too Dianna because Sport is one of the only things this world has left to unite it. It's always amazing to me to watch the world come together under those 5 rings.

Take heart. A Yeti with a bomb strapped to its chest is an awfully large target.

not really that funny to the people of Volgograd...
Just trying to make light of a tense situation. A little levity goes a long way.

don't think you can make light of global terror but as a fan of dark comedy I applaud your effort ;)

Honestly, I'm very concerned. As much as I've looked forward to the start of the Olympics, I'm now nervous that something is going to happen, and Putin is such a douche. He's being so bullheaded by saying he doesn't need any help.

I am fearful.

You'd have to be insane to start **** in Russia. These are guys who blow up pirates instead of arresting them.

Those dudes from Dagestan and Chechnya are hardcore, scary people. They have been fighting long before Al Qaida even came to be. I'd venture to say some of them make Al Qaida look like choir boys. This will not go on without an incident. They don't value human life, especially their own.

That being said, Spetsnaz will light up anyone that even hints at making a scene, without discrimination or hesitation. They kill first and ask questions later...no red tape for them. I do feel a bit comfortable knowing some of the most ruthless SOBs that have ever walked the planet are guarding athletes from across the globe.

Toss a coin. This isn't the U.S., they don't need planes or boats to get there. The caucuses connect to Russia...they don't need much help to get across the border, a backpack maybe. They ARE in Russia as we speak, they always have been. There is no debating that. Do they attack? More than likely. With success? Who knows. They made a mess for years, this is delivering the western world on a silver platter symbolically. It's hard to believe they won't be foaming at the mouth at the prospect of attacking everyone they hate simultaneously.

Again...Spetsnaz is on the scene. As mentioned above, they kill first and ask questions later...and they are VERY good at their job.

They are very good however in the weeks leading to the games they have allowed suicide bombers to make their deadly statement in Volgograd.

I think the games venues will be kept safe but I wouldn't want to be in a crowd downtown in any Russian city between now and the closing ceremony.

Quite true. They are better at pre-emptive strike, AKA kill the **** out of everyone that even thinks about killing Russians. Hopefully (and I'm not a fan of war) they get the drop on these guys (and girls, they are notorious for suicide bombings).

Honestly, I'm surprised (actually, I'm not as we backed the fundamentalists against the soviets in the 70s/80s) we haven't started a united front against them with the Russians.

Putin did hold out his hand after 9/11 but the west passed him over.

Can they? Sure.

Will they? No idea.

I don't know. I tend to think yes but I can't vote "yes" without second guessing myself.

I watched that happen, and here it is 40 some years later and the support for the agenda of those who did it has increased to the point it appears to be a significant percentage of people posting on this board. Here you have an entire culture that reserves its highest honors for the mass murderer, and they are the world's darlings.

The question I would ask is "In a world where terrorism reaps such benefits, is there any reason to stop the practice?"

After 9/11 Putin reached out to the US and offered full support to them however Bush and his admin pretty much ignored them. Tony Blair talks about it in his book when I get home I will quote it for you as its very interesting.
