- Although its PC on steroids, initially thinking incorrectly a YouTube video motivated the Benghazi attack is understandable.
- Being concerned that having boots on the ground in Libya would both create a negative image of US imperialism among people who already have negative views of us and will also make them targets of insurgency attacks is understandable.
- Responding with multiple a rescue forces that didn't get there in time because they were on other continents for above reasons is tragic but is understandable.
- Using this tragedy as a political opportunity excites the base, who already will never support the incumbent nor anyone else from their ranks in the future, but is a turn off to those outside the base.
The failure of Benghazi IMHO wasn't the YouTube video claim as I think it was a plausible but false assumption in the tragedy's initial phases. The failure of Benghazi was a strong but secret US military camp should have been set up and well hidden in the back woods somewhere in Libya that could be deployed in a moment's notice from within Libya. The GOP makes little impact beyond its own loyal ranks making monumental deals over things that don't matter like acting like because the administration first thought a YouTube video inspired the attack caused it to happen.
I also think credibility become an issue when we have a huge fit because AFTER THE FACT they were initially incorrect about what motivated it when we aren't willing to acknowledge our own incorrect information BEFORE THE FACT that has led to actions that with correct information maybe history would have been different.
