Should 13 y.o. boys be allowed to consent to hetero-sex w/adult women?

Should the age of consent be lowered to 13 y.o. when a boy wants sex with a woman?

Only if it is also for girls since we all know that girls at that age are actually more mature. The only difference sexually is the social reaction to them having sex. For a boy, he's a stud, for a girl, she's a worthless slut. Lower the age for both and quit demonizing consensual sex.

If some adult woman had had sex with my son when he was 13, they'd BETTER put her in jail or I'll break my boot off in the crack of her ass... 13yo's are not mature enough to make good decisions about sex.

Now if you want to argue it should not be the same as FORCIBLE rape, that is not as severe legally, I would agree.

So if he had sex with a 13yo girl consensually, that's better? He can do that, just not with an adult?

Nope, didn't say that. Now technically I think the Romeo and Juliet laws would have protected him (and her) in such a case... but that does NOT mean I would have been okay with it.

My son has always been bigger and more mature looking than his actual age, and this has been a problem sometimes. When he was 12, there was a 16yo girl after him when we were on vacation... I politely ran her off, because I knew he wasn't ready to "play in that league". :)

How's a 13 year old girl going to take him out to IHOP in the morning after?

With her babysitting money, the bus or a bicycle. You'd be surprised how able 13 yo girls are at solving simple problems. The bigger question is how they managed to spend the night together without either parents finding out all the way through breakfast at IHOP.

So I'm chicken for not wanting my 13yo son to hook up with a 16yo girl who might have taken him off into the bushes for something he wasn't ready for?

Dude, seriously... what could go wrong? Well there is:

STD's
Unwanted pregnancy
A wide variety of issues that can arise from becoming sexualized too young...

I'd of been a bad father if I hadn't stepped in and stopped that.

Seems to me you'd be better off having a few discussions with your son if you want him to be informed instead of trying to police his acquaintances. But I do notice that parents seem to stupidly think that keeping their own children entirely ignorant is the best way to not need to trust them. Instead they're the ones who make normal choices with bad results.

It's a square chicken i.e. ****-block. It could have used a smiley. I was saying it more as a joke. I know there's always risks involved with sex no matter the age. Summerwind is right, you could have also talked to him about risks/reward etc. People don't give kids enough credit. I'm not saying you made a wrong choice, I'm just saying there was another option in-case he encounters another hottie who wants to get into his pants.

Kind of a strange thing to post regarding children and sex.

I'm wondering how old you are and what your interest is in a thread of this nature?

Yeah I should have caught that.

Actually we DID talk about it... we talked about everything, still do.

A 13-year-old's brain is soft-boiled. It's not fully cooked. Sex between an adult and a 13-year-old child isn't merely demonized. It's pedophilia.

My age is clearly listed in my profile, or at least I'm pretty sure it is. I also don't appreciate the insinuations you're making.

A 13 year old banging a hot 33 year old woman in Arkansas was the inspiration. The thread is specifically about boys having sex with ADULT women. If you have something to say go ahead and say it and don't hide behind insinuations.

No, actually it is Ephebophilia: sex with adolescents.

Don't get me wrong, I'm against it... but I also don't think it is in the same category as actual pedophilia (sex with children pre-puberty), because the victim IS sexually mature even if mentally immature.

It should be illegal, but not to the same severity as forcible rape, when we're talking teenagers.

Seems to me either sex at 13, regardless of who it's with, is pedophilia, or it's not. It's very frustrating when it's only a crime for a 13 yo to have sex with someone over 18, but not with someone 11-17. Whether we like it or not, teens have sex, we need to become more realistic about this fact and quit demonizing girls who choose to, and quit glorifying boys who choose to. Which again, like it or not, our society judges thusly.

Age of consent is always a tricky subject because it is attempting to gauge maturity based on just a person's age. Obviously, people vary a lot more than that. But it comes down to averages. There might be some 13 year olds (of either sex) who are capable of making fully informed decisions about sexual activity, but most probably are not. The reason for prohibiting adults from having sex with minors but not other minors is because adults are far more capable of influencing minors into exploitative relationships. The balance of power is just too far in one direction. I think if we had completely effective and always used birth control and disease protection, there would be more room for variation, but we don't. And it is harsher for girls. There's really no way around that. Pregnancy is a danger that males simply will not have to face.

It's a tricky and complex subject, but on the whole, no. 13 year olds cannot reasonably be assumed to be able to consent to sex with adults.

We're on Post 15 now. Where has this commendably altruistic justification been? Seems to be a long way from a giddily enthusiastic "Yes!" that was the entire Original Post.

Many states have very complicated age-related laws when it comes to pedophilia. A 13-year-old who has sex with a 14-year-old is a very different kettle of fish than a 13-year-old having sex with a 40-year-old. I see the sense in that. You don't?

I like your post until I get to the last sentence. Please explain how a 13yo can consent to sex with another teen, but not with an adult. That part is just stupid, imo.

No, either he/she can consent, or he/she can't consent. It doesn't make any sense that the ability to consent is determined by the person you consent with. Makes no sense at all, regardless of the laws' attempt to make it sensible.

Actually there is sense in the Romeo and Juliet laws. If a 13yo and a 14yo have sex, who do you charge with Statutory rape? They're both technically unable to 'consent'.

And it is harsher for girls.
Which is why I specifically referenced it as boys having sex with adult women. Males are less likely to get an STD, and the boy certainly won't have to worry about pregnancy. The balls in her court, no pun intended.

Because adults have far more coercive power. Why can't a student have sex with their teacher? Because the teacher has control over their education and grades. Most kids obey adults as a general rule. They have to. They don't have control over anything themselves. They can't house themselves, clothe themselves, feed themselves. They are dependent on adults. And it is extreme naive to think that only parents exert that kind of control over kids. Every adult does. And allowing adults to use that power to leverage sex from minors... that makes room for far too much abuse.
