In the near to medium term? Bloody stalemate, with advantage to Assad. It is in the interest of all the other main players to project enough force to keep the issue contested, but not enough to win. Shipping some basic anti-armor missiles and trained individuals to the anti-Assad forces could have similar effects, however, to the introduction of anti-aircraft missiles into Afghanistan to be used against their helicopters.

In the end the current regime will prevail, but death and chaos will continue

It's interesting that all of your choices seem to assume someone wins and that fighting ceases, instead of simply ratcheting up and down in patterns for years and possibly decades.

    Hard to say.

Iran would do everything in it`s power to not lose that ally.

But so would Saudi Arabia to get rid of Assad.

Mainly, I hope the West stays out. There is nothing to gain there and the sides that are at each others throats are enemies of the West anyway.

We have a saying/proverb here in Germany:

"Let the wolves rip each other appart."

So my giant question is - if Hezbollah and Al-Qaeda want to kill each other..... why in the world are we against that, exactly? Once we are able to ensure that WMD stores don't fall into the wrong hands and that IDP's are out of the way, we should be secretly sending aid to whoever is losing at any given moment.

Because it is not just Al Quaida and Hezbollah. In the North, Kurdish seperatists have declared autonomy and have ever since been under attacked from both the FSA, Al Quaida and Assad. Last week the FSA started fighting ISIS and Al Quaida because they were causing havoc in ereas that they controled.

Other than that this has the potential of spilling over into Lebanon and nobody wants the brutal 1980s civil war to repeat itself there.

I think this will be good for both the Kurds and the Turks long term, actually - it gives them common cause to cement their new agreement, and Turkey a reason to support the de facto autonomy of Kurds in the Kurdish regions that they want to control anyway. The region has historically been split between the forces of Istanbul and Persia -the Kurds will simply become a buffer for Turkey against Iran, allowing it to focus effort north and east against Russia.

Other than that, if the Islamic State in Iraq wants to go to war with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, and Zarqawi increasingly loses the ability to control those who claim to be acting in his name again, I'm fine with all of these actors continuing to just murder the crap out of each other.

Lebanon is a worry - especially given that in a worst case scenario for the regime, that is certainly where the Alawites would retreat.

I agree with what cpwill posted.

It will be a bloody stalemate that will never really end because a lot of bad feelings on both sides won't go away.

    A mess.

Eventually, their will be a truce, Assad will flee and the country will VERY slowly heal.
