You bastard! It just stopped snowing here about 15 minutes ago, we just got about an inch of snow just this morning. However, it's supposed to warm up this coming weekend and week and be in the 30s, 40s and 50s, which is really not too bad for this part of the country in January, so I'm not complaining. I'll take it!

It is now 68 and raining here in Uhland, TX. Forecast is for highs in the low 70s for the weekend (and no more rain) so I can finish up my current roofing job. ;)

I'm trying to think of a place that I wouldn't be prepared to visit if a free holiday there were offered. Maybe Pyongyang. Possibly Mogadishu. Beyond that, bring it on!

I've been to Paris, France dozens of times; always a pleasure. Beautiful, cultured and, despite the myths, I've always found Parisians friendly and hospitable, and I'm English.

I'd go to Paris, Texas on a freebie in an eye-blink. It wouldn't be my first choice of Texan cities, I'd love to see San Antonio and Austin, but why the hell not? I know that Texans generally might have the absolute opposite values and attitudes to me, but I've been to places where I've even less in common with the genpop, and had a great time.

Not in Austin they won't.

Now that sounds like perfect weather. I would gladly take the rain over the snow. :)

What Andy said. I've been to Paris 6 or 7 times. Too much just ain't enough. The only truly rude person I've encountered was an old bat working at the pay toilet in the Gare du Nord. The food, the culture, the architecture, the beauty of the city and the history are more than enough reasons to return to return to Paris again and again.

I was in Lyon on 9/11 having just left Paris on 8 September and I returned to Paris about 10 days later. I will never forget the overwhelming expression of support for the US and the kindness shown by the French, especially in Paris.

Just admit you said you were Irish. That's the only way a Parisian will treat an English speaker as human.

I live in a place with the best climate I can imagine: short, cool winters, short, hot summers and just perfect, warm gentle spring and autumns. I certainly don't plan my travels according to general climate concerns, I just choose the best time of year and go - in the winter head south, in the summer north. Easy.

In my long experience that's a myth. You'll get a better reception if you speak some French, that's true, but the same goes for speaking some English when visiting any and every Anglophone country too.

Lol! I've just grown tired of winter and want to escape!

I'm sure that all depends on the person you are dealing with too. I don't know how anyone can make such a blanket statement. SOME French people must like Americans regardless, if only because of the tourism business.

I am Irish, a few generations removed. Both sides of the family are from Ireland. But if anything I suspect the French might think my American Southern accent to be some sort of weird Irish dialect. :)

Been to Paris, loved it. At this time, I'll give the trip to someone who has never had the pleasure of traveling, or donate it to Make-a Wish.

That sounds cool.

I've never been to any southern states. I have no idea how hot it is. I know here in the summer in MA, we flock to the beaches because it's always 10 degrees cooler on the coast than inland. I was kind of surprised that Corpus Christi was SO hot because it's a coastal city.

Sea breeze helps a bit, but it can only do so much out in the desert. I doubt Corpus Christi's anywhere near as bad as Kuwait, but when the breeze came in off the ocean at Arifjan, it'd actually only makes things worse.

It'd be like 110 degrees outside, and you'd have like 100% humidity on top of it.

The biggest problem I had was that most people simply wouldn't speak english to me. They all seemed to understand it well enough, they just chose not to speak it.

Given that I don't speak any real French whatsoever, this made for some irritating experiences at restaurants and on the train ride home when I was trying to buy tickets. I also avoided the subway like the plague.

I didn't want to get lost.

Just a simple poll to see how many of you would take a free trip to Paris for a week if it were given to you tomorrow, to be redeemed sometime in the near future.

What's your answer, and why?

Uh, yeah. What have you got against Katmandu? Why not Katmandu? The goatherds come into town on Friday night and get drunk through Saturday night, and all you have to offer is the Louvre and crap like that.

I dig Paris. I'd go even it it meant paying for the trip....I have before. Anybody who buys the French hate Americans...feel free to. Maybe government to government problems exist, but I never found that to be the case with ordinary people when I was traveling in France. Nobody was ever the least bit condescending or disrespectful. Actually, quite the opposite.

I voted no. I have no real interest in Paris or any of it's neighboring area's. With the exception of Ireland there is not much in that region I care to see. If i am taking the time off to travel I'm going someplace it's warm whether I am paying for it or not.

Why wouldn't you?

I'd go to pyongyang on my own dime, just to see it (though there are numerous other places I would rather travel to first). And the only reason I wouldn't go to Mogadishu is due to the very real safety concerns.

It's a dirty, crowded, expensive, and unwelcoming city.

Crowded? It's 2 million people. Then again, I see you're from Charleston, so I'm guessing even a place like Albuquerque may seem crowded to you. The only thing I'd agree with is that it's expensive. Definitely not for the cheap traveler.

I'm from Orlando originally. Orlando, however; is more spread out. Everything in Paris is piled on top itself, and the traffic is, quite frankly, insane.

Between the dirt and the trash, it was also probably the dirtiest city I've ever been in. It gave even New Orleans a run for the money in that regard.

Paris might not be especially bad in comparison to someplace like New York City, but I've frankly never been there anyway.

Well when you have a sea breeze, you get lucky. I live 5 miles inland and get a sea breeze from time to time. It's brutal when there's no sea breeze, though.

I was there during the millennium new years (you want to talk about inflated prices?), so maybe they were maintaining it better, but I didn't notice any issues with trash

Would I go for a free trip to Paris? Sure!

I know a few very nice Texans I would like to visit.
