Exactly. We need to change our societal expectations from allowing people to sit on their asses collecting a government paycheck to expecting people to be responsible for themselves and if they're not, I'm fine with them starving.

It would require charities, religious organizations, and community organizations to pick up the slack. Poverty is a local problem, not a federal one.

Best ways to combat poverty
• close corporate tax loopholes and make spreading the wealth around the best way to lower taxes
• end the war on drugs, reform the prison system with a goal to reduce recidivism
• mandatory birth control for all teens (harsh penalties for non-compliance)
• increase education funding, give free college education to anyone that maintains good grades in needed areas (Focusing on STEM)
• universal healthcare to prevent medical bankruptcy
• high minimum wage tied to inflation
• large public works programs automatically kicking in when unemployment goes up

Help them to all move to a socialist Utopia. I hear North Korea is lovely this time of year and mejico is quite nice too...

It would just require people to stop being lazy and stupid and irresponsible so that there isn't all that much slack that needs to be picked up.

How about we stop outsourcing, become autonomous once again, open up trade with the world (for all of our goods, to anyone), close our borders to everything except trade, let the people have their money (wait...so they can SPEND IT aka perpetuating the economy), and stop fighting non-sensical wars overseas.

What a novel thought.

Poverty eliminated through economic expansion. You mean, we don't need to rob people of their success to end poverty? People can work if there are jobs available?! ZOMG!!!

Wait. There's the problem of the indoctrinated lazy. It will take a few generations, but eventually they'll stop.

You can indeed make them drink if you penalize them severely for not doing so.
If they have low/no income, how can they be penalized?

I think the best way to combat poverty is to stop devoting so much time trying to turn the polls section here into your own, private conspiracy asylum, and go out and start working for a living.

Thanks to Al Gore's climate savings, it's 3 below zero here, I can not cast concrete at this time. And on top of that, he's the one who invented the internet...

It was a little chilly this morning. I had to put on my mink slippers.

- Focus more on encouraging Americans in starting businesses.

- Mandate a portion of each Americans income be withheld and invested into an indexed, tax sheltered mutual fund they get to start spending at age 60 in portions amatorized to match their remaining life expectancy and is fully willable without tax penalty upon their death.

- Improve education by extending government funded education beyond 12th grade to a four year degree, especially in high demand high income 21st century careers like medical, engineering, science and technology. Get creative in earlier grade levels with the use of technology by enhancing students' access to instruction from a range of sources including the best classes from anywhere in the world via multi-media, interactive computer networking.

- Place legal restrictions on personal consumer indebtedness.

I believe the government should make sure every citizen has emergency shelter, food, clothing and medical care (full medical care for children/the disabled) to survive reasonably comfortably.

Outside of that, individual financial prosperity should be up to the individual. And there should be no laws or taxes that favor the rich OR the poor; big corporations or small businesses...no benefits for anyone.

I absolutely agree, and the money to pay for those things does not need to come out from anyone but by simply getting the countries resources back from those who hijacked it.

I believe many poor are misinformed and brainwashed by the media which pretends to care for the poor in order to fool them, like the Fox News pretends to be Christian and non main stream when it is in fact an international network itself. same with liberal networks such as MSNBC. same with so called public networks such as PBS - nothing public about it, so what if they get government funding and collect donations - it's management is never elected - they are all fraud. ANYWAY, try to think outside the TV box and ask YOURSELF from deep within - which is the best way to combat poverty, REALLY.... I will discuss my opinion later on.

Where is Kill the Poor?

The only tool to fix poverty is work. People can't get out of poverty without doing something productive with their lives. The real question is how to motivate people to do something productive when they can get welfare for doing nothing.

What's up with the **** poll?

Anyway, the best method isn't a matter of just one approach.

The best way to fight poverty is a job. Create the environment that allows people greater access to jobs and the opportunity to create their own by way of a business.

First there is very little poverty in the US and second I didn't see anything on the list about creating jobs.

This poll is awful, so I am not going to select any of the responses. However, the best ways to combat poverty are to:

1. Reduce the number of teen pregnancies and pregnancies out of wedlock.

2. Reduce the number of single parent households, specifically single mother households. There is probably no greater contributor to poverty than dead beat or absent fathers.

3. Better education.

How we do that is certainly very debatable, but those 3 things would have more of a positive impact towards reducing poverty than just about anything else.

Jobs don't enter into your thinking?

Jobs don't enter into your thinking?

Of course, but education / skills training is essential in having the kind of marketable skills that you need to get a job that pays enough to lift you out of poverty.
