The embargo was imposed on Japan for its invasion of China. If Japan withdrew its forces, the U.S. would drop its embargo.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Dude! I'm well aware of ALL the rationale behind Roosevelt policy at the time. None of it has any baring on the fact that the US embargo on Japan was a provocation, and they responded in kind. Never forget too, that Roosevelt wanted into WW2 while the American population was 80/20 against. There are many behind the seen (but certainly not unknown, today for sure) things that Roosevelt was doing in an attempt to change American opinion on that. One thing is certain. It's not as though the US was sitting on our side of the world busy with our personal affairs and out of the blue for no reason whatsoever the Japanese decided, hey, lets go bust Americas chops. WE (well, the Roosevelt administration) chose to inject ourselves over seas (again, the merits or not of that are irrelevant to my point) and squeeze the Japanese and they hit back. That cannot be denied.

I never denied that we squeezed the Japan, but it was the hopes that the embargo would encourage Japan to remove her troops from China. Besides I was replying to ChrisL to let him know why the embargo was put in place.

Don't place the sanctions, embargoes or blockades unless you have been personally attacked. One provocation usually leads to another.

So we have placed strangling sanctions on Iran. They'd bitch slap us like Japan did, if they could. Now suppose Iran pulled a blockade on us, what do you suppose would be our response? We'd Pearl Harbour them wouldn't we, and you would be defending it.

Why do I have to be placed in the extreme as isolationist by you, just because I disapprove of interventionism?

I think you were replying to him because I agree that we were playing peacekeepers at that particular time, and I'm a she BTW.

Poking a stick at Japan which resulted in Japan bitch slapping us is hardly playing peace keepers.
