Political correctness prevents us from addressing some serious issues in our society. Thus, failing to truly address them. making society unable to correct them.

It's a double-edged sword I suppose.

Mankind's collective stupidity seems to mandate some form of political correctness. Too many ignorant people have big mouths to just accept total freedom of speech. Mankind would be in a perpetual state of chaos. Sometimes it's hard to believe we all live on the same planet.

Correct answer is it depends. Is Political Correctness trying to make it illegal to say certain things? Then yes. Is Political Correctness being used to point out, correctly or not, that saying something is inappropriate(and this is the vast majority of cases involving political correctness), then no, it is in fact an application of free speech.

I completely and wholeheartedly agree. If anything, he came across as a racist to me because he seemed to imply that minorities do not have those things.

Think about it, if I'm saying I believe in hard work, and he says that those values make me a racist, then isn't he the one who has a lower opinion of minorities?

Shouting someone down when one is in a position of authority, while it may not be officially "repressing freedom of speech," informally I was not in a position to give any further opposing argument. So technically you are right, but the debate from that point on was squelched.

Gook is a Marine Corps phrase in use before the Mexican American War. Any thing (person, place or thing) that is strange or anyone who's not an American could be referred to as being a gook.

U.S. Army soldiers during the Philippine Insurrection picked up on the word from U.S. Marines. During WW ll American soldiers in southern Europe referred to the white Europeans as gooks.

A white beard scratching PC liberal during the early 70's would decide that the word wasn't politically correct.
 
I think it's high time the GOP stop nominating Liberals and let their next candidate use every non-PC term in the book.

if he's shouting down students, it sounds like he's probably just an asshole. i'm still ok with somebody being afraid to tell me racist jokes in public, though. people who do that are even bigger assholes than your teacher.

With the possible exception of "trailer trash"... because minorities live in trailers, too... those are still ok and used with impunity.

The bad political correctness

The focus on changing terms like man hole to gender non specific terms. I doubt anyone but a few radicals get offended by the term manhole

The good political correctness

The part in which people are expected to be polite to the person or persons they are interacting with

Being intentionally offensive is rude, and peoples actions including their words have consequences. Some include being asked to leave, losing out on jobs (go ahead and call the Vietnamese job interviewer a gook because you are expressing your free speech) to being ostracized because of your conduct by your friends and family

In the vast majority of case the government will not do anything (in Canada only if it is determined to be promoting hatred, or is libelous

You can say all the insults you want, and you are free to do so. Just don't be surprised by the consequences of doing so
