If you want to have a free country you have to have a free press.

"The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen."
~ Tommy Smothers

You damn right. Tommy was a big proponent of that. He even said that he'd rather have press without government than government without press.

The VPC is a anti-gun group of course they are going to say that.
But they used Federal Bureau of Investigation Data to compile their report. You don't trust the FBI? :shocked2:

I was gonna vote the snow option - but I don't mind snow.

I voted No. That they would do it anyway.

However, now that I think about it, they use media to promote gun control and put pressure on politicians to support gun control legislation, which disarms good people, thus making it easier for people like that. And harder for people to defend from that.

I think the media does play its part and also influences the next shooter to immediately think of what took place at the last shooting. How the Cops respond, people, the whole bit. If the school had safeguards. Did they search or are there metal detectors like they have in some Chicago schools. I think all this gives the next one up a generalized road map.....and that's not even with what they have thought up in their own head.

Would you make a decree that any and all shootings committed by teenagers, no matter how small or large, no matter the death toll, become banished from all media outside of the immediate area it happens and completely banished from all media 24 hours after incident?

Nope. I much prefer an unregulated press.

You are now the Supreme Dictator of USofA.

You have all-ending power to do what you wish.

If part of the reason some kids might be going to such extreme measures is the fact that they might become "famous" is true, why not put an end to the "route to fame"?

Do you think the media hype over these events plays an important role in setting up the next tragedy?

If so - would you do something to change it if you could?

This is the part that bothers me.

I don't want to know the shooters name. I don't want to hear the shooters name. Why the shooter did it is a police matter and I don't want his name drilled into my head over and over again to where 1 year down the road when the name is mentioned I know which shooting it was and what happened.

They can report that it happened but without the name of the shooter.

That would work for me.

Want to know why there are not enough stories that depicts people preventing crimes with guns? Because there is not enough of them to sing about, James, that's why.

If that were the case then the media would be all over the ones that do happen because it is such a rare occurrence.

Don't you agree?

Do you trust SCOTUS? Because they cited that study James showed you in the Disctrict of Columbia v. Heller case. Also why would that same study have received the Michael J. Hindelang Award from the American Society of Criminology if it wasn't accurate? And why would Criminologist Marvin Wolfgang, a self styled pro-gun control advocate that would love it if ALL guns were taken away from American citizens and even the police, state "What troubles me is the article by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. The reason I am troubled is that they have provided an almost clear-cut case of methodologically sound research in support of something I have theoretically opposed for years, namely, the use of a gun in defense against a criminal perpetrator"?

You should also note, as your linked report also notes, that the FBI stats comes from volunteered information directly from some...not all....police stations. Another thing you should note is that not all instances where guns prevented a crime is reported to the police.....much less the FBI.

If I was the supreme dictator this country would have a heck of a lot more freedom than it does right now.

These people would snap regardless...with a bomb, gun, knife, car....doesn't matter, it would be inevitable.
That being said...
Media glorifies it. No question about it. I'm sure to some of these people that do snap, it's almost romanticized (keep in mind, the thought process is VERY different in these individuals). I believe they look at it as a way to make their imprint on the world that otherwise would have looked down on them, and the media offers a medium for their 'message' (whatever that may be) to be immortalized.
Media froths at the mouth over this stuff.
