Where will the next major war be?

    Hey all,

As we all know, unfortunately, peace can't last forever -- it's just a fact of human existence. So, my poll today: Where will the next major war be, and who will be involved?

There are plenty of trouble spots around, and as we all know from history, little actions can have big consequences. To my mind, there are a few probable places:

The Middle-East: Everyone's perennial favourite, the Syria-Iran-Israel-Palestine-Egypt-Lebanon cluster**** has been tense with the Syrian Civil War, not to other provocations on all sides, like the Egyptian coup d'etat, Israeli illegal settlements, Palestinian rockets, Iranian nuclear capabilities, etc.

South-Central Asia: Bill Clinton once said that the scariest thing he ever found out during his time in office was exactly how close India and Pakistan are to thermonuclear war. Throw in some drones, a large terrorist network, and nearby unstable Afghanistan, and this one could be a winner.

North-Central Africa: With NATO's toppling of Libya, and France's recent invasions of Mali and the Central African Republic in a single year, combined with appalling socio-economic conditions and plenty of Christian and Islamic terrorist militias, this region could become a battleground sucking in nearby Somalia to boot.

Korean Peninsula: The Korean War ain't over in the eyes of the North, no matter what geopolitics says. With one of the world's largest build-ups of artillery only 30 km from Seoul, North and South Korea are as tense as ever. With US military drawdowns worldwide, let's hope the North doesn't decide now's the time to strike.

South China Sea: An absolutely ascendant China may wish to finally get rid of the thorn in its side that is Taiwan -- the only thing standing in its way is the US 7th Fleet. Let's hope it stays there, or we could have another Chinese civil war on our hands.

Latin America: With the cartels running rampant and the Mexican government fluctuating in capabilities, causing more foreign and local deaths only miles from the American border, this hotspot could erupt if the right (wrong?) foreigners are caught up in it.

Or, from out of the blue, Spain could invade Gibraltar, causing Britain to declare war on Madrid and seize it, starting the third installment of the British Empire -- Portugal, look out, you're next!

What do you guys think? How will it start, who will be involved, and how will it end?

Multiple theaters, and it will be ideological. The great war of religions.

My guess is we have moved passed major conflicts and will engage in many smaller "battles" in the years ahead. Sad, but since there is so much oppression and hatred out there its bound to happen.

Interesting. But good luck getting Russia, Mexico and America to all fight on the same side.

The same could be said for Iran and Saudi Arabia, mind you -- the differences between Sunni and Shia Islam are enormous, especially to the followers of those religions.

Anyway, trends indicate people in the West care less and less about Christianity -- with any luck, in a few decades, it'll be mostly irrelevant even in America. Why do you think there will be such a reversal, and then such a war?

Counting simply the number killed, I would guess Africa but based on the number of global players and economic impact I will guess the Middle East. What makes a war "major"?

Well, it seems to me those who think Christianity is irrelevant will be forced to confront the 100's of millions who think it is.

That's a good question. I suppose it would be a function of casualties, forces mobilised, resources spent, and geopolitical outcomes.

    But I don't really know!

I don't think we will ever have a war of religions, at least not in the sense of Christians versus Islamists. What would be more likely is a war of radical Islamists versus everyone else.

Why so? I think, actually, in a couple decades the US will be much like the EU in this regard. In Europe, it's a personal matter -- your belief, your life, your moral code, etc. It's not for the state or the society to decide for you, and it's also not for you to decide for the state or the society. Surely this sort of religious freedom is what you in America seek as well?

Anyway, it's not to say that religion is irrelevant entirely -- just to say that it ought not have a place in geopolitics. I feel similarly about Islam -- the Islamic theocracies in the Middle East are revolting, both in their external worldview and their internal oppression.

So, that's what I mean -- I don't think that the millions of Christians in the US or Europe seek to force Christianity upon their societies, or other societies, so I see no reason there would be a confrontation. Is that not so?

Radical extremists vs. radical extremists. Hopefully none of the world's great religions will allow religious extremists of any faith to gain power over entire governments - and I include Christian extremists in that.
