Yeah, and there was also that time he cast a bolt of lightning in the book, but whatever. I still use more magic than that guy.

Well, Gandalf is no Harry Potter.

Its very pro gay! Legolas and Gimli are such a happy couple.

That's in the Director's Cut, actually.

Lets stay on the film, please. In the book Saruman has quite a different fate but we are discussing the film now. Thanks. :)

Ancalagon the black.

Hmm.

No. Star Wars on the other hand..... I mean... Lando Calrissian? Give me a ****ing break. Lucas may as well have called him "Interstellar Negro Pimp".

So, people, what do you think? :)
What's your feeling about that? :peace

It is heavily influenced and derived from Nordic mythology, which is about as white as one can get - so no it is not racist, it is a product of its source material. If you are referring specifically to the movies, a dark skinned character would destroy the verisimilitude. I do not imagine anyone who read the books filled in the details in their mind's eye with dark skinned characters.

Well, I think the answer was pretty much covered in the first page: no, it's not racist, unless you consider marketing to your primary audience (white people) as racist.

There's only one thing those eyes are doing, and that's undressing you. To be fair though, at least he buttons his shirt up.

Halfway through the movie I was expecting Pam Grier to show up and just be like "You's a baaaaaaaad maaaaaaan Lando."

Why is everybody saying there are no dark skinned characters in the movie?

Not to mention the "black riders".

Taken from Tolkiens own statements he wasnt necessarily racist, though he certainly had his anti-Semitic side. The battle of good and evil has pretty much ALWAYS been about the light vs the dark...it just makes it easier to portray. When the script is flipped and Hollywood gets involved its often the very white (or light) that are evil. Think The Time Machine, Omega Man, or I am legend.

If you look for racism you can ALWAYS find it lurking in the shadows.

I wouldnt have said Lando was racist. Now...Jar Jar...that character wasnt all together very well thought out...

To be fair, "darkness" is usually associated with "evil" and not necessarily "black skin". There literally 1000s of examples of evil white characters being dark without necessarily being black. Some of the more recent ones include: Voldermort, Emperor Palpatine, any of the Disney villains, etc. If anything racially black villains are under represented in the fictional world.

He's an intergalactic pimp who gets a perm. You kiddin'? Tbh, I just thought Jar Jar was retarded. I didn't even think he was a "black character" until people pointed it out me.

Agreed, because the dark scares us. In the light of day, we are very aware of our surrounding, as we can see for long distances in any direction if the ground is flat and no obstacles are present. But, absent any light, we are far more helpless and no longer have control of our safety.

Embracing the light and fearing the dark is a natural human response and trying to portray as racist that which we naturally feel is silly.

I figured it would be understood that I was referencing the main non-monstrosity humanoid races - green skins are not among them (ohh crap.. is it racist that I called them green skins?)

Gray or White, he was the most non-magic-using wizard ever. I count twice: once in the duel with Saruman (which he lost), and the second against those flying dragon things, and that was only to cast a ray of light that scared them off for some reason.

This is the magic using Gandalf:

See....thats just typical of black folk. Dood was the governor of an entire city and a successful mining business...and based on the fact that he didnt drive a low (looooooow) rider like Lukes speeder with hydraulics and a sweet base system, and he wears jerri curls, you want to make the successful black man out to be a pimp. And he sold out to the man...which makes him a tom to boot.

`No niggard are you, Éomer, ’ said Aragorn, `to give thus to Gondor the fairest thing in your realm! ’

(Yes, I'm being facetious).

OK, do these guys with the veils remind you of someone?

I don't think this thread went how Canell wanted.

And where's that, Mr. Hatuey?

Given your history of polls/threads on race, some bashing on PC stances and complaining about how nobody likes racists.
