Knowing the definition of the word, I admit that I failed to look it up. I did not look for other uses. Having done so, I now see that your argument was flawed in a different way than first glance.

Since I was adult enough to look up my area of naiveté, I will look forward to you doing the same. Start with these terms; sentence structure, supporting arguments, evidences, and value.

When you improve these areas of your argument, I think it would be much more enjoyable to continue. We can even work in more complex stuff for you later.

An example of nihilism is when one reduces or expands context so as to render any statement or action meaningless. It can be done to anything. In this case, you have employed this pathetic and intellectually dishonest form of rhetoric in attempt to claim "no one is native". Rift Valley natives have undoubtedly migrated throughout Africa hundreds of generations ago and really have no claim to country at all. So, what does this "argument" lead to? It leads to "there are no nations". At that point, you have exited geopolitical discussion, increased speed to max, braced yourself and jumped a shark.

If we are to accept that nations exist then your (so called) argument is stupid.

So by that respect....Americans of English decent should celebrate white history month? And consider themselves English Americans?

See where I'm going with this?

Why can't everyone just be....Americans.

Mostly because most people dont live in, werent born in, and havent been to America. :2wave:

Race really doesn't exist. Obviously there is an easily noticeable difference between say, a Sudanese person and a Norwegian person, but those are some polar opposites. Someone who lives on one side of the Ural mountains is considered Asian, while someone on the other side is considered white. It makes no sense. If you consider Hispanic a race, someone living on one side of the Pyrenees mountain is Hispanic while someone on the other side is white. In both cases, the people involved would appear to be of the same race. If you were to ask a kid, the kid wouldn't think they were different races.

Oh, yeah, that's what all Europeans think is so funny about the American 'race' categorisation -- Hispanics are white! They're of Spanish blood, and guess where Spain is? You got it -- Europe!

I think the whole politically correct "race doesn't exist" line is a joke. Talk about willful blindness, or seeing only what you want to see.

That's like saying blue eyes are a myth.

Look around you. Some people are black, some people are white, some people are asians, some are a mix. Even a child can tell the difference.

It may be even a child can tell the difference, but only adults demand there be a difference.

Here's an interesting take on things. I think of race as B.S. It's something played on by people with an agenda. I think of us as humans. So this isn't a race ploy, I suppose I want to prove a point here.

Is a white of skin color, south african...that immigrates to the United States....now considered an African American?

Put that in your pipe and smoke it race baiters on both sides.

That South African could could be called an African American .. and deal with the quizzical states. :0)

Color-blindness may sound appealing to some, but that isn't how life operates, it isn't how this nation operates.

Diversity is far different than tolerance.

As long as we self separate and self segregate ourselves by what we call ourselves and identify ourselves, we can never become one people.

There should not be any hyphenated Americans. We are either ALL Americans, or we are not.

Yes, that would be an African-American. Most of the blacks in this country aren't African Americans any more than I am a German American. We are just Americans with different skin colors.

Perhaps it is only because of my own particular background, but binomial nomenclature seems second nature to me. That people would wish to further define humans according to specific sub traits seems no more arch to me than dividing sub types of a certain plant species into recognized cultivars. There doesn't need to be any value judgements associated with such activity, though people tend to do just that with the resulting push in the other direction by those who wish to deny.

The funny thing is, if one approached the world in terms of making either/or distinctions, even if the individual distinctions being made are black and white, if one indulges in enough of them the results are inevitably grey. Perform enough either/or distinctions with humans and the end product is the individual, which is as it should be.

Yep. The ability to "self identify" yopour race/ethnic statuss, like Elizabeth Warren, is quite a hoot. Just as having a "minority" status for a county gov't contract does not apply to white males, even if they are a minority within that county.

Minority Business Opportunity Commission

I believe that's because too many liberal do-gooders look at the term minority as a qualitative rather than quantitative condition. It's really kind of sick when you think about it...

We can be, if only we would see what we should see...
But, as far as IDing a man....this becomes tough....I have seen so-called whites darker (more black) than so-called blacks....and vice-versa....the mutt syndrome..

No, pics here:

ecofarm's Album: pics

I went high and tight last summer, but I've let it grow a bit.

How about you?

Yeah, I've seen pics of ya before. Could have sworn that long hair was a mullet though ;)

Me? I take the clippers to my head once a month at zero guard.

Or county level does not determine minority in a meaningful way.

No. Nationality has nothing at all to do with race... If race did exist. Ecofarm pretty much nailed it. Of course I see terms like "African Americans" etc as divisive and unnecessary here. We are all United States citizens of different heritages and backgrounds. Hell People from Mexico are also "Americans." In fact people from South of of border are more "American" than most who claim to be "American."

Congratulations! This is indeed progress! I'm impressed. If you continue to improve at this extreme rate, I imagine we will be able to get a considered and (dare we dream it?) intelligible argument out of you in just a few short years. I have to say, that's better than my initial projection.

Now, since you were the one to bring etymology into the discussion, you can hardly get upset at my use of semantics. Well, obviously you can as evidenced by your crude attempts to demean me, but it is rather silly.

My comment was based on the fact that being native is a binary state. There aren't degrees of being native. You can apply it to being born somewhere, in which case anyone born in the US is native to the US or you can apply it culturally, in which case no culture is shown to be truly native to the US. It's intellectually dishonest (a cute little phrase I enjoy) to say that one culture is more native than another.

It's probably worth mentioning that I don't care what a group wants to call themselves to divide themselves from being American. I chimed in for much the same reason I play the Highlights games in doctors' offices. The atmosphere and previous arguments reminded me of childhood for some reason. Political correctness is hardly an intellectual pursuit and I mostly just find it entertaining to watch the foolishness as a spectator.

I have one such friend. We kid around about her being African American all the time. Similar fun designations were assigned to Theresa Kerry, an immigrant from Mozambique, when her husband John Kerry was the Democrat nominee for President in 2004.

Free insight into black culture: most blacks don't see ethnicity when they think of "the black community." They think of choosing to be a part of, identifying with and being supportive America's population; at least first and foremost. People like Robin Thicke, Michael Pfleger and Bill Clinton are thought of as part of the African American community more than Allen West, Alan Keyes and Clarence Thomas because the "white guys" are seen as intentionally choosing to identify with the black population while the "black guys" I listed are true or false perceived as intentionally choosing to not identify with the black population. Not completely but to an extent especially at the social level.

Is it safe to assume these are European South Africans? I don't think African American is an official race. I think the options are

Black
Hispanic
Caucasion
those who thought of being hispanic
Hispanic with a slight limp
Some who has heard of a hispanic person
Hispanic with a little bit of spice
various other relationship to being hispanic

These are the official races listed on the census.

Yes, that would be an African-American. Most of the blacks in this country aren't African Americans any more than I am a German American. We are just Americans with different skin colors.

America is not the only nation who collects statistics on race.

Obvious bait thread is obvious. A thread where an adopted, culturally and historically ignorant OP gets to rant that nobody cared about his heritage enough to give it to him on his adoption file. Lame threads like this makes me miss aquapub's threads.
