Nope. Never been sacked

No.

Come to think about it, I've never been fired from a job in my 40 years working.

BTW - "Fired" has a pretty negative tone to it. It implies that you were released "for cause" as opposed to RIF'd because a position was eliminated.

>>>>

I am listed as fired, but ultimately, I quit. I worked at Target while I was in college, and a snowstorm up north caused a delay in the paychecks being shipped. So everyone had to get paid out in cash from the cash office...only, no one gave me the memo. This was on Christmas Eve, at 1am, by the time we were ready to leave the store. I found out, and wanted to get cashed out, only the manager said the cash office was closed now. I said I wanted my money. He said I could get it in three days, I said no. He said there was nothing he could do. I told him to call his boss, he wouldn't (it was 1am, after all), so I called him a ****ing moron douch bag, and he'd better give me my ****ing money. (I used to have a pretty bad temper). In the end, I left (without saying I quit), and got a call day after Christmas explaining that I was not to go back to target ever again, and that my check had been mailed. He said I was fired, I laughed and hung up.

I've never been fired from a job, as of yet. It would have to be really really bad, for me to lose my cool enough to get fired.

Yup. Owner was a criminal and the business collapsed, along with a few weeks of back-pay I was owed.

Yes. I was fired a couple years ago for whistle-blowing. And I'm damn proud.

cp, I've lost a job due to the company going under too, but I don't think that counts as firing? I think that's under the umbrella of being laid off.

There's a difference between "no longer being employed" and being fired. I think the OP is actually referring to being fired.

And being fired definitely has a negative tone to it, but being fired is not always the fired person's fault. Yeah, usually it is but not always. Take the whistle blowing example upthread. There's also the office politics reason that some people have seen or even experienced.

I don't mean to derail the thread, I think this fits in. I have had to fire people in the last 10 years and believe me it was no fun. Neither man was up to the job but they both had families and mortgages etc. Being on the other side of a firing is maybe even worse than being fired.

Job? What job?

That word might disappear from American speech, due to lack of usage. It's a shame, really, since it is a good word that explains how some people get money!.

Good morning, humbolt. :2wave:

How are you doing? Good Thanksgiving? Fully recovered from that recent nastiness? Questions, questions. I have always earned my money not from a job, but from an adventure. True, I was paid for a job, but I always considered it an adventure - something my employers - usually owners - weren't always thrilled about. A job needs to be fun once in a while. An owner did once tell me he thought I was having too much fun while doing my work.

Yep, you should have known better. Business etiquette requires a sometimes sullen attitude...makes you a team player in management's eyes! And you get promoted if you become unbearable!

I'm doing well--had a wonderful Thanksgiving--and I'm almost fully recovered from pneumonia. I guess it was my turn in 2013...broken leg and pneumonia both in the same year! I hope I'm off the list now for a while!

This explains a lot. Why didn't someone tell me sooner? Now, it's too late.

Good for you. You have had an eventful year. My younger sister had pneumonia a few years back, and the recovery took over a month. It's a long road back to feeling good after that, I guess. And yes, you are due a good year or two after this one.

Why no poll option for "never been fired"?

I'm 50 years old. Never been fired from any job ever.

Ohio has a Public Policy exception to at will employment. The way that came about was a man was fired from his job after the court ordered the employer to take out child support. That's a kicker.

Was that before October 1, 2008 or after October 1, 2008?

What's interesting, I heard recently most people who are fired are not terminated for not doing a good job. Rather most people who get fired are let go due to personality related issues: disrespectful, conflicts with others, bad attitudes, combative personalities, abrasive personalities, insubordination, etc. There's patience for people who are positive and try their best but suck at what they do.

I have an employee who is late for work literally 95% of the time in a time sensitive position. Its hugely frustrating but she is a champion at apologizing, always commits to do better and has such a sweet, likable personality its hard to stay mad at her...until the next day when she's late again ::(. Plus she does a great job when she's there, would be very difficult to replace and adds enormously to our workplace morale atmosphere. I'm convinced its a mental disorder.

Then there is "laid off when they're hiring and not being seasonally rehired." Big advantage is that both of these scenarios qualify for unemployment benefits. Been there.

I feel ya. I had to fire someone once. She was stealing from me. I had my evidence just in case. I knew I was right and could defend my action, if need be.

I still felt like an a-hole doing it.

I believe all of this.

Never been fired "for cause".
