I have a friend who asked me to read a chapter in a book he's authoring. He's self publishing at his own expense and he has a history of dumping his hard earned money into his soapbox issues. What I don't get is who is he trying to reach with his book and what impact is he trying to make. I'll add, it seems the only reason he asked me to read a chapter in he book was due to some comments I made to him on politics and that seemingly offended him and that chapter gave his views on the subject. Upon reading it, I'm just shaking me head and I'm not even finished yet. It's filled with polarizing positions, offensive statements and unsubstantiated generalizations one of which is not even close to being true presented as facts.

I initially thought he was asking for my feedback but after thinking about it, he never asked for it, was motivated by not liking what I had to say on politics in race and only started to act interested in hearing what I had to say AFTER I offered feedback based on an assumption that he wanted to hear what I had to say. He's a good guy and means no offence. I wasn't offended at all but I know others will be if he publishes what he showed me. His problem is he's passionately driven by his political/social ideology, is letting the those with no clue define large demographic groups leaving him with jack squat understanding while making very emphatic statements based on very limited understanding.

One thing I've learned and still get caught off guard having lapses in judgment in by my participation on discussion boards is how easy it is to unintentionally offend people. Once you've offended someone, it is highly unlikely you'll be able to win them over to seeing things your way. But do most people even care about winning hearts? Are people really just interested in venting? Do people get a sense of internal affirmation by parroting the positions of their ideological team while reaching no one outside of their group? Do people get a charge out of slamming those they consider the opposition whether members the opposition his in the audience or not?

I'm not asking what makes the most sense now that I'm ranted a bit but what has been you default motive in expressing your views?

My motives for expressing my point of view vary depending on the subject under discussion.

Venting. I'm not here to change anyone's mind, nor to fight with anyone. My mind will most definitely not be changed on anything. Largely I'm here to vent the emotions before I do it with gasoline, fertilizer, and a U-Haul Truck.

To think through what I think about a topic, and to combat stupid where ever I run into it at. I find the people that are the most eaisly offended are the ones with the most superficial understanding of their postion.

Mostly it's about enjoying myself. Fun is the capital of the internet, that other stuff is byproduct.

Not this board but others.

- Drilling for oil domestically will not help defeat Middle Eastern based terrorism. Rather its the best thing we could do to insure a lucrative market for terrorists and dictators for decades by being vested ourselves in their only viable income stream.

- America is not completely innocent with respect to the root causes of Anti-Americanism in the Middle East.

- Gays are not evil monsters. That said, many will try to define others as such if you do not support normalizing homosexuality in the culture.

- This particular forum is highly unique in this respect but despite claims to the contrary, discussion boards are online think like us clubs. I've seen intolerance, double standards and special censorship applied toward people not in step with the prevailing ideology on most boards.

It's not humorous, Maggie. I'm completely serious. I see, hear, and read things on a daily basis that cause my stomach to turn and make me want to smack someone in the face, at the very least. Even from people and organizations that I thought I could respect, like Boston Children's Hospital. Honestly, without the ability to vent a large portion of that frustration at a place like this, God only knows what I would have done by now.

Limiting yourself to fertilizer is hardly managing the situation.

I post for the entertainment value of debating or, downstairs, the fun of ragging and squabbling. I also enjoy marshalling my ideas on a subject in writing. I always find it necessary to write something down in order to see whether my ideas are coherent. Some of my posts are therefore works in progress. It's also quite fun to play devil's advocate occasionally.

Have my opinions been changed as a result of being here? Hell yes! On many subjects, including, but not exclusively, about gun control, religious topics, the EU, US foreign policy, the ME. The biggest change I think has come about over the almost 4 years I've been posting here has been my growing frustration with and opposition to the nanny state, not the welfare state so much, but the unnecessary intrusion of the state into private lives - prompted by initiatives from both left and right.

I enjoy politics and have been interested in politics since I watched the Democratic and Republican Conventions on TV back in 1956. I enjoy expressing my views on things, it is good entertainment that at times lets me learn somethings from other I didn't know. I also get a kick on getting accused of being an Obama Hack on subject issues and being a Racist anti-Obama phobe on other issues. Then there are a lot of nice people on this site I would say I became DP friends with. It is always nice to talk to them and get their views on the subject of the day.

And the way I feel at the time, I might add.

I live to screw with people. Sometimes, however, I do enjoy looking at people who are laughably stupid and posting factual, statistical information to show them how laughably stupid they are. It's usually when leftists have the nerve to discuss finance or economics.

Actually, I don't really debate anymore, and when I do it's limited to just one thread.

I don't always screw with people but when I do even Mr. Spock admires my Vulcan Mind ****

Would've been better on a "most interesting man" meme. Just sayin'. :)

yeah but I am a technology challenged turtle. And I thought we banished MEME from this board:mrgreen:

BTW Anonymous polls-in the words of my Amish friends

SUCKETH!!

I like using memes. I just don't like saying the word, because of that stupid asshat that was thankfully removed from DP.

Fun , I like seeing others people op's and how other human beings think . The more minds the better. It lets me see the different side on the spectrum when it comes to thought. One sidedness can be quite boring .

Sometimes as other posters say to mess with a few people , but only the ones who show a complete biased ( its just to easy sometimes and hard to resist )
