Venting; getting it off my chest.
Bashing those with oppositing points of view.
Pep-rallying those on my ideolgical team.
Reaching silent observers who are not pursuaded either way.
Winning over the hearts and minds of those with opposing views.
No real objective other than shpening my communications skills.
and those nations with a combination of a vibrant capitalistic economy coupled with a strong social safety net fared best
by comparison, please share with us the happiness index of the citizens of those capitalistic countries where social benefits are insignificant
prove to us that a social support system is something not appreciated by the citizens of one's country

... and for the record, I believe there is intelligent (and knowledgeable) life on the other side of the aisle. I keep looking for it on DP.... (kidding aside...there are people here that know what they are talking about, even if I disagree with them...).
And, to provide a serious answer to the OP, I am here to learn, sharpen my arguments, have my perceptions challenged, enjoy an exchange of wit... and, on occasion, teach some things. I try to confine my discussions to things I have some reasonable depth of understanding in, which is generally business, economics, finance and taxes (and baseball)

Boredom, by and large, and the desire to scratch a certain intellectual itch. The occasional bit of verbal sparring can be rather stimulating given the right opponent.
Additionally I find that bouncing ideas off of others can be useful for refining one's own. You're never really sure why you believe what you do until you have to defend it to someone else.
