Recently the extent of the political pressure the RCMP got when it seized firearms from people's unsecured homes during the summer flooding in High River, Alberta was revealed. The Conservatives demanded the seized guns be returned to the owners. What the RCMP like to point is most of the firearms (more than 600 to be exact) they had in storage were voluntarily given to the police to be safeguarded during the disaster along with half a million rounds of ammunition. My question to you is if say your house was damaged and flooded, torn apart, burned, etc. by a natural disaster and have no safe place to store them would you surrender your firearms voluntarily to the police for safe keeping until you could return home and store them safely.

No I would not. should we voluntarily surrender other rights during natural disasters?

Re: Would You Surrender Your Firearms To Police Voluntarily During A Natural Disaster

No. I would go to great lengths to find a safe and secure place to store them, until permanent arrangements could be made.

So why not with the police who are offering that service?

It would depend on what my status at that point is. If I'm still in the area and the police cannot be there constantly, then I would retain my weapons. If I've already been evacuated, and don't have a means of securing the weapons, I think I may actually be inclined to do. Looting is a problem after a major natural disaster, and that is not something I wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands.

Well in the case of High River people were being evacuated and that is why the RCMP were going into people's homes, to find anyone who was still in their homes. They would also be under continuous armed watch so I'm sure they would be safe.

If I had left them, then they would be sufficiently secured. And in that case, I wouldn't be okay with it.

So why not with the police who are offering that service?

Because they are mine, and I can take care of them myself. I don't want anyone possessing them, except someone that I trust implicitly.

Do you not trust the police?

Do you not trust the police?

Why is it I'm reminded of police in New Orleans after Katrina?

Thirty years ago, when the police were more trustworthy, I might in an extreme circumstance. Fast forward to today, I'm sorry, but I don't trust the police any more than I would trust the mob in 1920s Chicago.

Re: Would You Surrender Your Firearms To Police Voluntarily During A Natural Disaster

I guess my question is what good would they be if you needed them during the disaster and you handed them over? During a disaster I am taking mine with me.

No I wouldn't turn them over.

That occurred to me as well. In times of natural disaster, especially if looting is possible, is the kind of times when you'd probably need them most.

I don't think the police are more trustworthy than they are now we just now have video of it.

If it was only my house damaged by fire, flood or what ever I would take my guns across the road to my oldest daughters house and store them there.

Somebody I trust should be okay, I could let them hold the weapons and ammo and they can use them for the range, hunting, or whatever legal purposes they can think of in return.

Well if it's a natural disaster I doubt it would only affect your house otherwise it is not much of a natural disaster.

**** no! There have been police chiefs trying to disarm American citizens for at least three decades, and some of them would be more than happy if an "accident" happened and a person's weapons were destroyed like that asswipe in Chicago. NOLA threatened citizens with shooting during Katrina for refusing their illegal orders to surrender their weapons involuntarily(but we fixed that with a law making that an offense in which an official can be arrested).

If it effected the whole area, I'd keep them to protect me and mine.

Re: Would You Surrender Your Firearms To Police Voluntarily During A Natural Disaster

I'm from a rural area and the locals are pretty good, but we're talking about guns. Keep 'em close.

If I was personal friends with a cop that I trusted, I'd let him keep them for me temporarily, but never in an official capacity.

My best friend is a juvenile parole officer, I have him and probably about ten people who aren't family that I absolutely trust. My family for the most part know weapons and safety well, so they are options too, but no one except for the person who would babysit those firearms for me would need to know.
