Now I know guys who have such a huge collection that they could not readily transport same... but most of them also have safes that would stymie 99% of would be robbers...
If I have to abandon my house, and thieves expect to get the guns, they had better plan ahead to bring some heavy-duty equipment with them, and be prepared to stay awhile. If they are capable of staying in order to rob, I am sure as hell capable of staying to ward them off.

He didn't know that, but that response was to Misanthrope using his scenario that he provided me. You can scroll back and take a gander.
This Reform Party member thinks it is high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first and their political party further down the line. But for way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

BTW those clowns who rounded up guns after Katrina should be rotting in jail
The only reason those police escaped prosecution is they claimed martial law status and really abused the hell out of not only the second but fourth amendment as well. I do wish a judge would have negated that defense, the law we passed preventing it in the future wouldn't have been necessary if the police had acted properly.

you know if some citizen had resisted and the cops fired and he killed one or two or three, I'd have a hard time-if sitting on a grand jury of doing anything other than no-billing

I wish I could say that police(still people that I don't know) will uphold their oaths to the public but with some of the stunts departments have been known to pull are known to the public............I don't trust them with my property.
It would be a risk, to be sure, but I think that 50/50 odds of return are better than you would get from the thieves.

Giving them to any authorities would literally be a last resort when all other options are exhausted. I would rather bury them in the back yard in boxes than give anyone I don't personally know access to them.

Well, hiding them or keeping them with you would be best. if the only options were as described in the OP, then the authorities would still be the safest bet.

In my own city that may be a possibility, the police here are professionals, some of them are real assholes, but they are professional. In a city like NYC or Chicago, no effing way.

Police custody would be the absolute last place I'd want to see our guns. We'd never voluntarily let them be taken by police.

‘Hell to pay:’ Residents angry as RCMP seize guns from High River homes (with video)

As to the poll question, I doubt the choice would be voluntary. If authority figures with guns saw or knew non-authority figures had guns, there'd be a confrontation of some kind. Thus, the choice becomes involuntarily because you're faced with restraint or worse if you refuse to follow orders I.e. handing your weapons over.
