Learn english first

Is she the only one who speaks samolian at your workplace?

Yes. She is actually. There are others who speak spanish and others who speak napalian. But the others are able to communicate fairly well in english.

There is no poll.
The poll is a lie.

Seriously though, ask a mod to add one.

I don't believe you

If she doesn't speak english, and no one there speaks Somalian, then how did she fill out the paperwork, get through an interview, etc?

That might be helpful "tomorrow," but it's not helpful "today." What percent of construction crews are from non-English and non-Spanish speaking countries?

That adds considerable expense, mainly for the benefit of "undocumented" immigrants. It also removes one more incentive for only Spanish speaking folks to learn English. Living in central Texas I do speak a fair amount of Spanish but assuming that to be normal places "immigrants" from Ohio at a disadvantage. ;)

Shes from a staffing agency. But i seriously dont know.

Many of the immigrants to the United States in the past 30 years don't have the intelligence to learn English. They're not here to speak, they're here to destroy the American culture and they've done that very well and been well rewarded by the Liberals.

Bet you look under your bed before you tuck in nighty-night.

Yes, that's why they're here.

Then you need to speak to HR
Well, i will say this; she is the most productive worker on my team. But her not being able to speak english (very well... at all) cripples overall prpductivity and takes more time and poses potential safety hazards.

i think this is a bit extreme. Most immigrants are very productive people. I dont know why so many of them dont just learn the damn language. If i went to live in mexico (hypothetically of course. I have no interest in that ****hole), i would make it a top priority to learn spanish for several reasons. I think they are intelligent enough to learn english, but people have overaccomodated so much, i guess some just dont care to.

Yea, especially those damned Canadians!

Immediate leap to mindless ridicule. Definitely struck a nerve there.

(grin!)
I didn't leap to mindless ridicule, I was dragged along.

So.... i have a question. Should employers have the right to refuse employment because someone cant speak english?

Disclaimer: this is not about any specific "race" or language. Just about legal immigrants who cant speak english.

So, at work today i got really frustrated trying to communicate with someone who didnt speak very much english. Only a tiny bit. Not nearly enough to hold a conversation.
Im a leader in the workplace, so from time to time i have to ask someone to do something or for information. Its really hard to communicate with a person who cant speak english. I asked this person to not throw out the damaged products of the particular job we were doing because i have to keep count and record of them. This person didnt have a clue what i was asking and continued to throw out the damaged products.

Long story short, it made my job a lot harder and a thought hit my head; why are people who cant speak english even hired in the first place? How did this person make it through the process and interview with such little grasp on the language?

I think that employers should be allowed to deny employment to those who cant speak english. Im not saying they shouldnt be allowed to hire them, but i think they deserve a choice in this matter. What do you think?

If an employer hires somebody they cant communicate with, and or their employees cant communicate with, if there is a problem OHSHA will be all over them, whoever gets hurt, and their attorneys will be all over them and rightfully so. So yes they should be able to refuse employment, and ought to. That's an accident and lawsuit just waiting to happen.

I have a lot of practical experience in this very matter. I had a crew of mainly Indians, Pakistani's, one Egyptian, Bangladeshis, Thai, and Filipino's. I had one Indian who could barely speak English and NO professional translators. Halliburton's management were ****ing morons to put it mildly. My job was to lead this crew of "professional" drivers in a combat zone and deliver fuel from the main fuel distribution points to the local FOB bag farms. I was responsible for their safety and performance and general everyday living arrangements and pay. As even Ray Charles can see, and he's dead, that one translator at the least would be very important. I had to get by without one.

Here are some tips to deal with that situation. The very first thing I would do if I were you is go inform your management you need a competent translator to communicate with this individual. If they dont and that individual gets you or others or themselves hurt on the job they will have OHSA breathing down their necks and will take a piece of their hides if they are lucky. It IS an OHSHA requirement that ALL workers be able to communicate, and receive communication of job hazards and safety information. So make sure they are informed and make sure YOU document it. If there is an accident you will want that documented you communicated this fact to management. Now if they dont fire the person in question then get yourself a white board and markers. Your gona be doing a lot of charades and hands on work. Your going to be saying things over and over and over and over and over and over again. Get used to it. Next start learning Somali and start teaching her English. Its going to be pidgin but it will help get you by. Know that your interactions are going to be time intensive. By the way whenever I had Somali's on my crews, those sorry bastards were the some of the most stubborn people I have ever run across. I absolutely hated working with them. It got to the point I would not let them on my crews. Hopefully your Somali is the exception to the rule. By the way if they hired her for affirmative action, that dont trump safety in the eyes of OSHA. I dont know what you do and how much effort you want to put into this, but your company if they are gona do this employee right ought to be helping her learn English as well as you from a safety standpoint for yourself and your crews.

She is stubborn as hell.... but so goddamn productive. She is almost twice as productive as most other workers.

And yes. I do end up having to do a lot of charades .

The napalian speaks english well enough to talk politics with me

That is too lenient. The Netherlands Tells Immigrants to Learn Dutch or Get Out.

Admittedly they should learn English first, but that would require at least 2 more years of work on top of the already months, even years it takes to get in here in the first place. Are you really going to deny a person the right to even make money because they can hold a conversation with you?
Also as a leader in a work place with people who speak other language, didn't you have to take a class or something? I know my dad did when he got a managerial spot.

they are allowed to not hire those that cant speak english....................

If they can require spanish they can also require English.

it annoys me that my neighbors, who are good folks, speak Spanish to their little kids.

Kids have an amazing facility for language, they'll learn two as easily as one, and it helps promote cognitive development. There's no actual disadvantage to speaking a different language at home, because they're still exposed to English everywhere else.

I certainly hope you are right. I don't know much about children. No doubt I was a child once but still....

I work in child care. My previous workplace was very multi-cultural, I've seen kids able to speak multiple languages before they're 5, it's not a problem.
