Should Newtown's 911 tapes be made public?
The Associated Press had requested the 911 tapes be released under the Freedom of Information Act so the public can judge the police response to the killings. But the state attorney, Stephen Sedensky, argued that the calls — which were "being made on the murder of children as it occurs" — are too gruesome for residents to bear.

"If the public never hears those cries for help during this process, they won't be harmed," Sedensky said.

Victor Perpetua, the lawyer for the state's Freedom of Information Commission, disagreed.

"Every time someone calls 911, there is a belief that there is a crime," Perpetua said. "That is part of the record, but to me the more important part of the record was what response did that person get? How was that information taken? What was the time period?

Should the 911 recordings be released?

If the people who made those calls or their family members in the event the callers are dead says its okay then sure release the calls.

I honestly couldn't give a damn if they are or not. They should still be released.

The only justification is "some people may be offended". Flimsy at best.

I can't see why not. Is there a "secret"?

No. I see no reason to do so other than morbid curiosity.

To what end?

There doesn't have to be an "end." As another poster said, the FOIA exists for a reason. The public's right to know outweighs everything else in this instance. There's no national security involved. *shrug* We pay hundreds of millions of dollars for our police departments, our officers and our 911 operators. We're entitled to hear how they operate any damned time we want.

Reminds me of this photo:

Too delicate . . .

No, it's really not. He lived (and died) it.

I believe phone calls should be private and contents only released with the okay of the individuals who made and received the call. Phone calls shouldn't be released for the sake of making money, political gains or trying to boost ratings.

I said no. It would only open up painful wounds for the people living there.

I really don't care...

I can see both sides of the issue. The familys won't want to have those wounds reopened, yet I believe in the FOIA.
However, if it is done for profit........ that would annoy me...

In the end, I won't listen to them nor read any transcripts, so it has no effect on me.

Maybe if people who are so adamant about automatic weapon proliferation, such as the NRA, had to confront the carnage those weapons can create, they would rethink their position or at least have to own up to it. That's one reason i can think of.

WTF are they trying to hide?

so political convenience excuses morbid voyeurism? i don't agree.

Private calls should be kept private - that I agree with. However, you don't call 911 for the purpose of anonymity. In situations like those, you have absolutely no expectation of privacy.

I'm talking of ways to accomplish actual gun reform. You can call it whatever you want. All i care of is to reduce these tragedies.

the phone calls aren't going to get you any closer to that. all it will do is reopen the wounds of everyone who suffered through the tragedy. i still say leave them private.

How do you know that when we never try such things? Instead of face these tragedies head on we just play sound bites of some parent condemning automatic weapon sales. All too easy to bring an NRA meeting to columbine when you never had to see a kid shot in the face. Look at how pictures have helped to end wars and barbarity like abu ghraib. Now you're right that maybe phone calls alone won't start any real dialogue, but you're completely wrong that it's just about sadism or whatever.

it's not about sadism. it's about masterbatory voyeurism. people won't listen to those calls and say, "wowzers, i guess i really do want to ban guns." they'll listen to it and get interested in the same way people get interested when they pass a really bad wreck.

and that is not a good reason to reopen wounds.
