Is the President YOUR President?

Is the President YOUR President?

Uh, yeah. The thing about having an elected government is that sometimes you lose elections. The overall framework, and the offices, are still representing you. You have loyalty to the presidency, and to the congress, not to the president and the members of congress.

Is the President YOUR President?

I occasionally hear people say, "President <insert name here> is not MY President!" Usually by people who intensely dislike the current President. To me, this places party loyalty, and to a lesser extent ideology, above country.

Have you ever had such sentiments?

Really good question, although I wouldn't been as blunt. I know a lot of people who seem to have an unwritten definition of patriotism that essentially means devotion to their political party.

I just stopped myself in mid-stream. Actually in fairness, its devotion to the American people who are always best served by their political party. To them other parties pose a threat to the American people. However what shows me they are good, honest and deceived people are:

1. The strong emotion with which they attach to politics.
2. Coupled with the double standard by which they judge those outside their party.

If running up the debt and increasing the debt ceiling where destroying America under Obama, they should have at least been somewhat concerned when Reagan and W. Bush did it and include that in their historical judgements. Meanwhile they should make Bill Clinton the honorary Tea Party President Emeritus for paying off Reagan's through the roof credit cards that mortgaged our children's future.

If Obamacare is going to destroy America, they should have been at least somewhat concerned with Romneycare.

My conclusion: its base instinct tribalism that drives them, an innate behavioral characteristic of humans. They have to find "issues" to use as their arguments to avoid being called out as unexplainably biased but at its root, in my view their problem with Obama is principally driven by not being seen as "one of us" or their "issues" with Obama would also apply to Reagan, W. Bush and Romney. Just my opinion, everybody's got one.

Whether he's the temporary leader of the country has nothing whatsoever to do with the country. Simply because I live in this country does not obligate me to support what the elected leadership does. That goes against everything the founding fathers wanted.

every POTUS I've lived under/with is my president. The exception is Nixon, i refused to recognize him.

Yes, he/she is. Whether I vote for them or not, whether I agree with them or not. Unlike many of the posters, I will say I will give my Presidents more support than a lot of partisans would be willing to do. Didn't matter if it was Bush or Obama, support them both.

Why? Because of Watergate? If you read a couple of books on LBJ and some of the stuff that has been released from his library you would find he actually did what Nixon was accused of trying to do. The huge difference, no democratic congress was ever going to challenge him, they would Nixon and rightly so.

Did you know Nixon gave us the EPA, OSHA, the endangered Species Act. He backed Affirmative Action and funds for education. He open the door to recognizance of Red China and lots more.

Yes he is my president. But I do not have to support a damn thing he does if what he is doing goes against my values and beliefs.

Depends on how you define "your."

I am a citizen of the US, Obama i the president of the US. This, he is my president. Is my my president in the sense of me wanting or choosing him? No. Is he my president by statute and authority? Yes.

This thread reminds of an old song by Credence Clearwater Revival, "Fortunate Son."

"Some folks are born to wave the flag, ooh that red, white and blue...and when they play hail to the Chief, they point the cannon at you."

I didn't vote in the poll because of its wording. Basically, I have always accepted that the president, whether I liked him or not, was the president of my country and therefore my president. I certainly do not always support the president. Obama has pissed me off royally more times than not, and when Bush W went into Iraq I was so furious that if I could have disowned him then and there I would have.

The short answer is yes, the President of the United States is my president... even if I want to strangle him with my bare hands. ... Uh... do you think the Secret Service is monitoring this??? :ninja:

Still one of the best protest songs ever written.

I am willing to put matters of ideology over my loyalty to my country. The difference is, I have the integrity not to call myself a "patriot" when doing so.

ok so other because the votes are so close that roughly 47% of the entire country dident get the president they wanted

Yep, he's my President and Commander in Chief. I abhor ALMOST every decision he makes. However, if people from other countries criticize him I don't take kindly to it. He may be the worst POTUS ever but he's my worst POTUS ever and no foreigner is gonna criticize him without me saying something about it........even if he may be a foreigner as well

it was closer in 2000 and 2004 and I don't hear you whining about that

would you like me to? the point is it is always like this, you cant just say this is the president of the united states, thisis the president that 53% of america vote for and the other 47 are completely ignored

Did Gore make the right decision for the USA by giving up in 2000??
Did Congressional Dems make the right decision by not indicting the whole lot of the Reagan administration over Iran-contra??
Did Obama/Holder make the right decision to let the Iraq war go and not have hearings??

I'm almost afraid to read the comments for this thread but to answer the question...Whether you voted for President Obama or not...He is the president of these United States and if you have not accepted that then tough!

I've always said, Obama is not my president. I literally have him on ignore.

You don't like that, why not go cry about it.

Who is your President?

Nah. People will still show up and make silly excuses over why supporting one's party over one's country really isn't supporting one's party over country. Wouldn't matter when you posted what you did.

Ok, I'll take a crack at it. What if I believe the current president actually does things to harm this country? I disagree that the president and the country are one in the same and that not supporting him in those things that I feel are harmful does not mean I'm not supportive of the US. I thought I remember Hillary screeching (literally) that dissent was a positive thing.
