Incognito- what should the punishment be?

What should happen to Incognito of the Miami Dolphins?

The Incognito story has gone from a story about Bullying to the plot from "A Few Good Men". What do you think should happen to Incognito and/or possibly the staff and ownership?

Why is it so often that these polls don't contain my answer? Is the pollster so locked into a position that he can't truly see all sides?

My answer is:

LOSE HIS JOB.

(that's it...no criminal charges (unless Martin wants to press charges for the threat to kill him)...no investigation....no NFL punishment. The offender should lose his job, as he has lost his job BEFORE for bad behavior.)

He should be reinstated and play. The Dolphins can institute new rules if they want, and hey...maybe the coach shouldnt tell other players to "toughen him up". If the league wants to cover its ass and put out some rule they can do that as well. Beyond that...guess what...its a rough sport. Life is rough. Some people need to grow the **** up, especially a 350 pound grown ass man.

Look...ANYONE that has played organized football knows this kind of stuff goes on. Always has. Always will. There is a REASON why the majority of his teammates support Incognito. Hell...I read yesterday that the black players on his team not only support him but have labelled him an honorary black man.

The "honorary black man" ****e...being an "honorary white" is an insult. For as many black guys who like Incognito, there are those who don't. Black people aren't a hive mind. Besides which, Martin is black...so he might disagree with that designation.

Before this, many Miami Dolphins have been on record for saying that Incognito is "more black" than Martin.

I figured it's just a matter of time before Martin gets called an "Uncle Tom" for going to Stanford. Remember what Jalen Rose said about Grant Hill, who went to Duke?

Martin is not supported by his teammates...a pretty good indication of what the people that understand the game feel about the situation. Was he over the line? Yeah...maybe. As pretty much every person that has played the game will tell you...when someone is over the line...you put them back on their side of the line.

I'm actually quite amused at all the gushing over this. OMG...really? People speak harshly...maybe even 'bully' players? WHy...this must be some NEW thing. Ive NEVER heard a coach tell a player to put on a skirt, or stop hitting like a girl, or any such thing...certainly not back in the 70's and 80's when I played. Why...these revelations are as shocking as when we found out that Barry Bonds and others used (gasp) steroids! Who fricken knew? I mean...other than ANYONE that watched or was around the game since the mid 80's...

I dont know about an Uncle Tome (and I dont remember the Grant Hill thing...but I know they are plenty displeased for him taking it outside of the locker room.

Wow. I think I just saw a video of 5 people with a greater need for gynecological appointments than Jonathan Martin.

I think it should be handled by the Dolphins and NFL league office and that is the end of it. You will never make me believe that this does not happen in other locker rooms. I played football in high school and my first year of college, one has to be mentally and physical tough to play that game.

In what universe are the voice mails that this thug sent to Martin acceptable behavior? What exactly is it that is 'manly' about them?

steve smith of the panthers physically assaulted two team members in separate incidents - one of then with severe damage to the victim
yet he is viewed as one of the stars of the team

incognito remains supported by his team mates, in a way that martin is not
and if it is confirmed that the coaching staff instructed incognito to 'toughen up' martin, then he will receive a 'get out of jail free' card and go on to help another team in need of a superior offensive tackle
hell, i hope my team picks him up ... just like they should have done when vick was available

martin is soft. the NFL is the one workplace where being an ivy leaguer does not work to your advantage. before college he was in an elite private high school. he needs to man up if he expects to continue his own career. and given his recent play, even that may be inadequate to keep him in the NFL

You mean 'man up' like the thug Incognito?

He has a history for sure, but for the most part it was opposing teams that had the problem with him. He was a complete dick at Nebraska, and has basically been considered the Conrad Dobler of today's NFL. Of course, now he's only considered the 2nd dirtiest player, now that Ndamukong Suh's here.

In the end, most teams will recognize him as a VERY competent guard who will go into the trenches with you and for you. If he's waived or released, he gets another job within a week - without question.

Doubtful.

What makes them manly,Wiggen, is the fact that rocketman would immediately lose all control of his bowels and bladder were he to receive such threats.

It could be. The sport is just too violent for the tender sensibilities of some people somewhere. Beats the hell out of me. I played in high school. Anybody who plays and doesn't think they're going to get hurt probably doesn't have anything upstairs to hurt in the first place. But yeah, we're going to get all PC over football - no bullying. Looks like they'd like that both on and off the field. Soon we'll be forced to watch replays of Obama drone attacks on a loop on Sundays. Far, far less offending.

This is hilarious. Just go and watch the video of Tony Dorsett today and tell us how much people are over-emphasizing the violence of football.

Got it. Apparently if I don't threaten to kill somebody, assault their mother, and defecate in their mouth, I'm not manly. Who knew?

The bar is just set SO high these days.

Incognito should, at the least, be fined and suspended. However, given his history of crossing the line, I wouldn't mind if he was banned - formally or informally - from the league as a whole. He just seems like bad news.

As for the coach, ownership, et al., I would need to know more about their role in this situation. My guess is that they created or allowed a culture where this sort of nonsense was allowed to happen. If that's the case, they need a punishment that will be effective as a deterrent for the heads of every other team.

I don't buy into the "oh it's just football" and "Martin needs to just man up" arguments. Yes, you need to be physically and mentally tough to play football and my guess is that since Martin made it that far, he is probably pretty tough. It must have just gone too far for him. I know the racial slur and the threat were too far for me. The fact that he didn't go to any of his coaches or other team leadership makes me think the treatment against him was endorsed by them so I don't blame him for leaving.

I think in sports like football, people don't often draw the line between being tough and being abusive. You don't have to be the latter to be the former. Incognito doesn't seem to have learned the difference.

Great, now even football bows to the nannies. How long before they require them to play with an imaginary ball and stop keeping score? If you can't stand the jock itch, stay out of the locker room. Martin needs to restrict his football play to video games at his mother's house.

Saw it. Of course football is violent. Everybody who plays knows this and the effects of some of it will last a life time. The longer term effects of head injuries are a relatively recent discovery. They need to be addressed, and they will be. The rest is just hype. Many, many sports offer the prospect of such injuries, and more.

At this point does anyone really have enough facts at this time to decide any sort of punishment?

I wouldn't go that far. Martin may be emo, but Incognito has had problems with every team he's played or almost played for.

Yes, "manly" hazing goes on in locker rooms everywhere and pranks too. That's what I'd call socking rookies with an obscenely expensive supper bill. And tweeting that you're going to defecate in somebody's mouth is just childish and pathetic. Posting a pic of Martin in a go-kart and calling him a "big weirdo"? Whatever.

But if it's true that Incognito threatened Martin's family, that's not funny. That's not "hazing."

I'm surprised that so many people take this incident so seriously and are trying to make it a larger societal issue and not just nonsense that goes on when men play games. If you want to treat this the same as you would two people in normal walks of life, then I hope you're prepared to charge pretty much everyone except place kickers with assault and battery because that's basically what all football players do every Sunday and what makes it the most lucrative sport in North America if not the world.

Reminds me of idiot prosecutors who in the past charged hockey players with assault because of stick swinging incidents or bench clearing brawls. It's a game folks - get over it.

Well, let's not make a societal issue out of it then. What I've thought about a lot is the business decision. Incognito is talented and therefore valuable...and yet he's ended up leaving every team for which he's played. He's brought unpleasant media attention to his team. Maybe he will be immediately hired by another team. But would you hire him?

What galls me is that he's not the only Dolphin who was in on this. I'm looking forward to his teammates speaking up in his defense and acknowledging their roles. Martin wasn't a good fit, and maybe they wanted to get rid of him. Saying so would be "refreshing," wouldn't it? Not that it will happen, but wouldn't it? ;)

This is the attitude that sustains crap like this. "When men play games." Give me a break. Racism and threats like Incognito is accused of aren't just a part of "men playing games". In fact, his history has shown that his behavior stands out as over the top. I think it was the Colts that put him on their "No" list because of his "bad character."

Those are very low standards that you have set for men.

There have been several of his teammates speaking up for him. Everything that has been said is that he has been a positive influence on the team and locker room and a great teammate.

I don't disagree - it is a business decision - and the league, if they choose, can deal with it too from a public relations perspective - but this business about lawsuits and perhaps criminal/human rights charges, etc., is nonsense. I am adamantly opposed to actions within a game, which is essentially entertainment, being treated as if it has real life dynamics. Maybe prosecutors could start charging comedians next and we can go back to the era of Lenny Bruce being jailed, or maybe we can just chill.
