The last time I checked NAFTA is not like EU citizenship and the Schengen area.

Its not like that its like what it did to Mexican markets and employment.

"An influx of highly subsidized corn flooding the Mexican market has displaced millions of rural farmers, according to McClatchy Newspapers. Prior to the implementation of NAFTA, Mexican officials claimed that factory jobs would fill the void left by disappearing work on family farms.... Those displaced workers are largely the result of U.S. corn exports to Mexico. Heavily subsidized American Agribusiness not only put hundreds of thousands of American family farms out of business, but also dumped billions of dollars worth of American agricultural products into the Mexican market, putting millions of peasant farmers out of business...Between 1994 and 2001, the flood of cheap, subsidized American corn caused the price of the crop to fall 70 percent in Mexico. The drop in prices caused millions of farm jobs to disappear, with the numbers falling from 8.1 million in 1993 to 6.8 million in 2002...Those out-of-work farmers make up the bulk of the illegal immigrants entering the U.S. each year." Illegal Immigration and NAFTA | Economy In Crisis

"Indeed, despite the influx of foreign-owned factories, total manufacturing employment in Mexico declined to 3.5 million by 2004 from a high of 4.1 million in 2000, according to a calculation of Robert A. Blecker, an American University economist.... As relatively well-paying jobs disappeared, Mexico’s average wage for production workers, already low, fell further behind the average hourly pay of production workers in the United States, and Mexicans responded by migrating...." http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/18/weekinreview/18uchitelle.html?_r=0

Illegal immigration is not only good for the economy but at a net zero last i heard. This is an extreme overreaction. Haven't you seen the south park ep where the border patrol is rooting on the lone mexican who actually wanted to cross the border?

In addition, i believe people have an "inalienable right" to travel anywhere in this world.

then can i come and camp in your yard for free?

Why does no one ever propose this? Replace Homeland Security (or whoever guards the Southern border) and ICE with the National Guard or the Army; all new recruits would be required to protect the border for a period of time. Fortify and secure the border and no one would even think of crossing because even if they get over that wall they will have guns pointing at them from the other side. It worked well for Austria until they joined the Schengen area. I'm not just talking about building a taller wall but complete militarization of the border. It solves your illegal immigration issue for sure and will greatly reduce trafficking of all kinds across the border. What do you Americans think especially those who live near the border?

No, that's not necessary.
Just fine anyone who hires illegals, streamline legal immigration, and then legalize drugs to stop the violence along the border. Do that, and the southern border will be as peaceful as the northern one.

Be tricky; not sure exactly how Posse Comitatus might apply.

Might get messy too. Military is for killing people and breaking stuff.
But it's also for fending off invasions.

Personally, I'm in favor of annexing Mexico.

Would you support militarizing the Canadian border? or the shores of Florida near Cuba? or the shores of Alaska near Russia? We can't be selective about this or we will appear racist.

So what if we appear racist?

One day, maybe, the leadership of the US will grow a pair and erect a wall. A real wall. There will be National Guard or para military arms of our LEOs that will patrol it.
Probably once its way to late.

Nobody is coming illegally from Canada.

It's not illegal unless you get caught. The Canadian border is too huge to enforce. Mexicans are taking luxurious vacations to Canada and then sneaking across the border and into North Dakota. Nobody is even noticing.

The Coast Guard already patrols the Florida waters from the air and water.

Whatever. They are immigrating across the Mexican border primarily and you know it.

I thought the Alamo was our's and safe.

Why does it matter? Militarism is militarism.

So you view a wall as militaristic? Yes, militarizing the border was the original topic of the thread but you brought up the Berlin Wall.

A little over the top, but I guess it would work.

Not to mention it will create a lot of employment and will boost economic growth.

We would have to use the Mexicans to build it and they would just put in hidden doors, so what good would it do.
