Would we also be watching Americans letting crops rot in the fields for lack of labor to harvest them?

There are millions of legal migrants for that... and Americans used to do that quite nicely. Besides... watching crops rot would not be exciting. Time lapsed? Maybe.

Fortify and secure the border and no one would even think of crossing because even if they get over that wall they will have guns pointing at them from the other side. It worked well for Austria until they joined the Schengen area. I'm not just talking about building a taller wall but complete militarization of the border. It solves your illegal immigration issue for sure and will greatly reduce trafficking of all kinds across the border. What do you Americans think especially those who live near the border?
We had it set up like that for a while here in AZ. The National Guard would set up observation points and call the Border Patrol when they spotted someone. The Guard guys weren't allowed to contact any of the crossers. It worked really well until one of the OP's got shot at and they pulled the plug on the program.

One of the other problems we have is that a lot of the border is private property so you'd need special permission to cover those areas.

What if the government simply poisoned the Mexican water supply?

    Elegance doesn't cover it.

Posse Comitatus is pretty much irrelevant these days, now that many policing agencies, both federal and local, are damn near their own small militaries.

Might get messy too. Military is for killing people and breaking stuff.
Not necessarily. When I was stationed in South Korea, the bulk of stuff we did was humanitarian. The National Guard is pretty much just humanitarian aid and disaster relief when they aren't deployed.

To answer the poll question, I think a healthy balance can be achieved, but the agents on the border have to be allowed to do their jobs.
I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

It's interesting that you bring up labor, because I'm in California right now, and one of the alternative forms of punishment here (Watsonville) is to send light offenders to the orchards and fields run by private owners to do agricultural work as part of a detox/get your **** straight program. They do the same for recovering addicts in private organizations that help people get over their addictions. It's kind of a win/win scenario, where the agricultural side definitely benefits from free labor (or semi-free, since some also provide housing), and it gives addicts and dumb kids an opportunity to evaluate their lives, and stop doing the dumb crap that got them there.

Work therapy is a great idea, one that should be used more often.

You would think there would be plenty of labor, what with the illegals who are already here, the legitimate immigrants, and the out of work Americans, but the growers insist that they couldn't get the crops in without the illegals.

not true, I worked in those fields before any Hispanics were scene. If the farmers paid people what they do these people, they would have no trouble finding help in today's economy
