WASHINGTON — Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who in recent weeks has had to explain a series of plagiarism charges, said in an interview Tuesday that he was being held to an unfair standard, but that there would be an office “restructuring” to prevent future occurrences.

Sitting in a conference room in his Senate office complex, Mr. Paul, drawn and clearly shaken by the plagiarism charges, offered a mix of contrition and defiance. He said that he was not certain whether it would affect his prospects should he decide to run for president in 2016 — he said he would happily return to his Kentucky doctor’s practice — and he asserted that was being unfairly targeted.

I can't decide if this is silly or pathetic, but at the very least it's embarrassing for a grown-ass man. In school plagiarism can be grounds for expulsion. What should it be for real adults in the real world?

Sued by the original author and if it's copyrighted, well, up to 5 years i think is the law. Since he's a lawmaker, that would only be fitting.

While I'm DEFINITELY not a Rand Paul fan, this is much ado about nothing. So what? Borrowing a few sentences? This isn't a novel for sale, it's a speech or whatever.

Whatever punishment you might think appropriate, remember that Liberals plagiarize Marx,

.... just so you know, Marx is basically the founding author of modern capitalist economical terms. Terms such as dividends, surplus value, division of labor etc. - all terms used in modern capitalist lingo - were all defined by him. Keynes and Smith were storybooks in comparison to Das Kapital. So in essence, every time you talk about how capitalism works, you're plagiarizing Marx.

Stalin, Hitler and others all the time.

Give us an example?

That completely depends on the situation, in the Netherlands a professor was found to have plagiarized himself on his doctorate, in such a case I think he has to have his doctorate re-evaluated and if without the plagiarized text it would not have been enough to get him his doctorate, that doctorate has to be stripped of him. Without that doctorate he would have to be fired from his job teaching as a professor and should be sued for profiting from plagiarism (his professors wages).

For a politician public ridicule normally would suffice because they make an almighty idiot of themselves if they do something as idiotic as plagiarism and all the bad press and ridicule is their own fault and they should not be whining about their fair comeuppance. If he has a political speech writer than idiot should be suspended for bringing his boss in hot water and publicly apologizing for that blunder.

If someone has profited financially from their plagiarism by plagiarizing music, text/books or ideas they need to be stripped from profits and then face public ridicule for their stupid actions. This normally will have to be through lawsuits.

In the case of Paul Rand nothing should happen, he did not benefit financially from using the text from the Week magazine or from using the wikipedia comments. He just made an all mighty jackass of himself and that seems to be sufficient punishment for his small plagiarizing transgression.

Ohferchristsake. Some conservatives, the dreck they come out with, you gotta wonder how they manage to navigate across the floor to the computer, never mind find a website.

What punishment does Joe Biden suggest?

I don't think it should be a big deal at all unless it is something that is gaining the other person money or major power/status from just the plagiarism (such as someone passing themself off as a "great thinker" because they use a bunch of quotes from others).

Just using a speech of another person or lines from someone else in a speech is not something worthy of anything but embarrassment and loss of respect.

You mean things like their constant hate speech. Their racial intolerance for white heterosexual Christian males. Their constant rhetoric about how successful white males have caused all the suffering in the world. The constant call for the purging of all non-liberal/socialist/progressives from politics, blaming them for everything bad but refusing to actually hold their own accountable.

Those kind of things?

Really, got any cool ones. Maybe we can make fun of them too. The ones on the board don't seem to throw out as much dreck as the liberals ones, so the liberals get made fun of more often.

Didn't Biden have to tank a presidential primary run on account of something like this many years ago?

I think Paul is a realasshole, and nothing could make me happier than to see him lose every race he ever runs in for the rest of his life.

But I see nothing wrong with borrowing quotes in speeches, and I think it should be unpunished.

Just a pointless gotja when there is nothing else the media can think of to attack with.

Please show me liberals plagiarizing/quoting Hitler and using his views on the "intolerance for white heterosexual Christian males". Thanks.

In this context nothing, if it was something he had written for profit sure, if it was a scholarly article sure, in a speech you (democrats) are just reaching for anything they can and it looks pathetic.

Comes to dreck, it's hard for anyone to top...
"Liberals plagiarize Marx, Stalin, Hitler..."
I mean, imagine the thinking?

Figments of your imagination. Or, if you haven't that much imagination, figments of someone else's that you like and wish were true.

Ah, I see. Because I criticized Liberals and other socialist types, I must therefore be conservative. How exactly does that work as anything other then demonstrating an inability to consider anything more complex than a binary data set?

Three terms fall well short of pervasive authorship. Furthermore, I seriously doubt Marx coined the term or concept of the financial dividend, and "surplus value" is not a capitalist term (think: profit). As for "division of labor", maybe so, although "specialization" must be about as commonly these days.

How did I know the plagiarism apologists would come out of the woodwork.

Imagine the size and furor of the lynch mob had Obama done this very same thing!

Good thing then that I was addressing primarily towards leftist who are incapable of comprehending complex, adult or non-self-centered rhetoric.
You grammar stinks and the thoughts behind it don't pass any smell tests either.

It is people like you who give conservatiism a bad name
