Hey guys, I'm doing a project in religion class and I need to make an argument for or against animal testing and I need some other opinions for or against animal testing. Here are some basic pros/cons
Pros
Many discoveries in modern medicine come from this
Without it, modern science will slow to a crawl
If it is outlawed, we are hurting humans(by not doing everything we can to find a cure for diseases) to help animals.

Cons
We are hurting and torturing animals
There are alternatives that could be used that do not violate animal rights
We do not have the animals consent to test on them.

Any thoughts would be awesome! Have a great day everyone

I am increasingly con on the subject for a lot of reasons--the torturing of animals; that some of the rats used are already predisposed to tumors causing the whole mess to be questionable; the viability of alternatives like computer modeling, the ability to grow tissues in lab settings, and the willingness of people to participate in drug trials.

Yes, but with restricting and regulations against otherwise avoidable pain and suffering.

Someone has to do it and besides...I don't care how wishy washy you are....the life of a human being is always greater of that of an animal. This is how science progresses. We can't always get a happy ending. We can't kill people because we want to test a drug that may or may not cure cancer.

Animal testing is a minute portion of "hurting" and "violating" that happens every day. Don't forget, we "do not have the animal's consent" to be eaten either. Now, if we agree at some point, as a society, to ban eating animal flesh, THEN outlawing animal testing could be discussed seriously. Otherwise, it is deeply ridiculous, to suggest slaughtering countless cows, pig and chickens is fine, but sacrificing a few mice to find life-saving cures is somehow not kosher.

Umm, you can't get consent from something that doesn't think in a rational, or at least marginally logical manner. ;)
I don't really like the idea of animal testing, but I realize that without it, our medical technology and choices would be next to nothing, so it's basically a choice that has to be made. Do we place our own well-being over that of lesser animals?

If it's for medical purposes, and there are no other reasonable methods of testing, then yes. Testing for cosmetic purposes or when there are more humane methods at a fairly close price, on the other hand, is immoral.

I'm okay with animal testing for medical purposes. It's not pleasant, but it saves people's lives.

Testing cosmetics and stuff on animals I'm not okay with.

I would be pro animal testing.

I would like to know the IQ of all three of my cats.

Dogs are easier to read.

Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

Yet of course there are innumerable verses placing Man above the animals.. thus, my view:

Alternatives to animal testing should be used as much as possible. When animal testing is absolutely required, it should be done as humanely as possible. We should not torment animals more than is absolutely necessary.

How do you know they don't? And how does that impact the value of that life. Why don't we just use the stupid or brain damaged humans? I've met plenty of dogs smarter then a lot of humans I've seen.

A most logical and concise argument. I agree completely.

It is not so simple of a thing. Under some conditions, I might support it, others not. You want a black or white answer instead of the various shades of gray.

Personally, I don't do testing on animals. I only have dogs and they chew up the pencils and paper and never give any answers to the questions.
