I'm honestly sick of this anti welfare stuff. Why is ok for the Government to be dependent on other countries to pay their bills but not ok for the people to receive ANY help at all to SURVIVE?

The question would depend upon how that $25,000 compared to how much you were making at your job.
If you were guaranteed a $25,000/year income by the government would you quit your job and stay unemployed?
I know I wouldn't, how about you?
It would be tempting. Finding useful things to do with my free time would not be a problem.
I don't make all that much more... maybe 30 when all is said and done, but then there's taxes.
And for those wailing that 25k isn't enough to live on... Ok, I'm sure it isn't enough in NYC or LA, but lots of people live on less. I know lots of people around here that make less. Probably average household where you have a young couple with a two children, hubby makes 20-25k and wifey works part time for maybe 10-15k but shells half of it back out on child care expenses.

$25,000 income in California is ****...I makeover $50k a year and I still worry about bills
CC, that's a bold statement, and it's wrong. I make only a little bit more than that right now, and I live quite comfortably. So yes, I would do it. The only ones who wouldn't do it are those with a family or those who would do their job for no pay. But even those with a family, if both spouses were taking this home, would also be able to retire.
So yeah, it's more than enough. I'd be gone in a flash.
$25,000/year is no where NEAR enough to live on, so even if I didn't like my job, absolutely not.
Regardless, I love my job, so no.
2009 I made 11,200,
2010 I was down to $8800
2011 I soared to $14,000
2012 sky rocketed to $17,200 and put some in my IRA
2013 I'll be close to $20k
I live just fine, no govt hand outs, no debts, and my #1 expense remains gasoline.
