Well, in the city where I live the average price of a home is about 250,000, and that is for a modest home. Some places in the country are obviously much more expensive to live than others, so it all depends on where you live.

True story. That is why I fully intend to stay out of the DC/NorVA/MD area, despite the fact that pay is somewhat better there. Cost of living and driving is just too much insaneness.

Lol! And I'm looking to get the heck out of this part of the country to try to save some money! Heating too is outrageously expensive here, and winters are loooong.

:shakes finger: that's what you get for living in the North East, instead of the South, where the civilized people are

No, I don't live in LA. I live in Northern NJ, pretty close to NYC.

Well, you're special, then. Most people don't have a house and car paid off. I suppose if I had both paid off, and already had a good retirement and savings account, then I wouldn't mind retiring on 25k/year. I'd have to have a good supplemental retirement income, though, whether from an IRA or just a good portfolio I could cash in on.

Of course, if you have all that, you're not going to qualify for welfare, anyway, and that seems to be the point of the thread.
