They say that there is a strong relationship between music and mathematics. So how good are you at math?

I'm not a professional musician, but music has been something that I have done since an early age (piano, oboe, clarinet, and musical percussion instruments, and tried my hand at guitar). I'm also a huge fan of classical music. I'm very strong in math, having taken several college math courses (algebra, geometry, trig, but no calculus).

The highest I went during my undergrad was calc 2. Aced it.

In grad school, I took Managerial Quantitative Analysis - which basically is a fancy way of saying "advanced statistics". Aced it.

I played the skins for years.

Facepalm, bish.

Not a professional musician either but am a decent bassist and a crummy classical guitarist. College level calculus is as far as I got.

i made it all the way through calculus, and did quite well in it. since then, i've forgotten almost all of it, unfortunately. i was lucky; my dad actually teaches calculus, so i had in home tutoring.

i use algebra extensively at work , and i really appreciate the usefulness of it. however, i don't think i can claim an intuitive grasp of mathematics. i had to really apply myself to get it, and i sometimes still make stupid errors when doing calculations. i triple check everything to make sure that the 100x stock isn't actually 1000x. yeah, something like that happened once. and by once, i mean a few times.

My first introduction into music was as a percussionist. Written drum music is all math, all day.

I had basic high school math simply because I was lazy and wanted to rock and roll instead of taking challenging courses.

Then the Navy got a hold of me. The A.S.V.A.B. told them I was more or less a borderline genius, or so said my recruiter. :lamo

They said that I will be a Firecontrol Technician. Need of the Navy and all that.

That meant electronics training and math I never knew even existed. But it seemed to come natural.

After the Navy, I went to college. Tested out of most required math classes so I wouldn't have to pay for the courses. But I did end up taking advanced math courses. No problem.

Now, I play bass guitar for a very successful, regional band. By the time I got here, I could still count to four. Most everything else has been forgotten.

It really depends on the method you play music. A friend of mine which went to states for Trombone and Euphonium was an incredible Mathmatician, he was very devoted to theory and the workings of music. Another friend of mine is one of the best guitar players I have personally known, but he is terrible math and is incredibly expressionist. I think that people take different approaches to the arts in general.

I'm not very good with math, I can manage, but I'm honestly bad. I was pretty good with trig though weirdly, but that was back in junior year of high school. I played drums and sax (alto) mainly, formally and informally trained.

Didn't know there was any relationship. I haven't seen it amongst the musicians I've known, but personal experience can only say so much and so isn't much to run on alone.

I stink at math yet I'm brilliant at music.

I was pretty good... when I was young. :peace
Geometry is my favourite.

As for the connection... yes, I believe there is a strong connection between music and math.
