Because some kind of public good is beneficial for everyone. Marginalized and forgotten people are dangerous.
If you notice something good in yourself, give credit to God, not to yourself, but be certain the evil you commit is always your own and yours to acknowledge.

    no

I paid for mine-why don't you do the same rather than making me pay for yours as well

Who is going to subsidize these 30 million people? Most likely those who already have insurance are going to be paying for those 30 million who originally did not have insurance, meaning their rates go up(which is probably somewhere in that two thousand plus page bill regarding the employer and individual mandates). I do support requiring insurance companies to accept preexisting medical conditions.
We are already subsidizing the system. The cost of "emergency room healthcare" for the uninsured currently costs more that $116B per year (2009). Having the uninsured's point of access to the healthcare system be the emergency room is extremely expensive and very inefficient. The average family insurance premiums include $1,017 (2009) per year to cover this cost. The federal government, through medicaid and medicare, picks up the rest.

The idea behind PPACA is to take the $3,000 per year (in your insurance premium plus the government pick-up) you are already paying to cover the uninsured and using that money more wisely by shifting the uninsured access to healthcare away from "after the fact" emergency room care to preventative healthcare. This is concept is the reason the PPACA makes sense.

In other words I got mine so I don't want anything to mess with it. Even if it is going to be better for you also in the long run. We have to shake up the system a bit. Even you must realize it needs to change. We can't keep paying double what other nations do for the same or worse outcomes.

    Wait and see.

Like it or not, its here to stay for a while.
That, of course, is totally non-responsive.

History also proves that NOTHING is "here to stay." But you are correct that the political power of the drug industry, corporate America, and the insurance industry is massive. So I agree that universal healthcare and healthcare reform has again been blocked - this time by Obamacare - probably for years, decades and maybe indefinitely.

why do I have a duty to not only pay for my family's insurance but that of the irresponsible?

if government subsidizes things as they do in other countries, the cost is not properly taken into account

It would seem any agree with you that we really should pay 4 times as much for half as much as now.
