The two things I consider when purchasing a new vehicle is Brand Loyalty ( Ford Only ) and Reliability. We have always bought Fords and have had fantastic luck with them. Whether it be new or used, we haven't had many issues over the years. I am a big stickler on maintaining my vehicles, especially since it is a decent investment when you are purchasing new. We are both due for a new car as our 2007 F150 and 2007 Edge are both getting close to 100,000 miles. I don't like to keep them past that simply because that is when they start to nickle and dime you.
In my experience, if you weren't so stuck on Ford, and considered other brands, you wouldn't have to sell at 100K and could keep them longer without getting nickle-and-dimed to death.

I do like Ford trucks, fwiw, but am not too hip on their cars.

I have certain brands that I prefer, because I have had good experiences with them, but I am not "brand loyal" by any stretch of the imagination. Things change, and I try to adapt with the changes. For example, I have owned two Mazdas and have had excellent experiences with them, but right now I think they have regressed and would not be as willing to consider them.

Mercedes do make some reliable cars but ive always found them to be ugly for the most part. Couple good looking and alright models through out the years but in general ugly.

My 2000 explorer sport has 250K on it with no real problems until just recently, But just a busted hose that needs replaced.
Have a new escape with the 2.0 Ecoboost in for about two years now and the thing is great! very quick care for price/money. All wheel is actually very good in snow and mud/light off road which i was very hesitant about. (not having a selectable low)
The M5 is awesome of course but some little issues.

nickel and dime is a relative term. I just met someone yesterday that has a VW with 200,000 miles on it and replace the water pump. The motor has to be removed to do that so it was $1500 and he had to do without it for 2 weeks. I would never buy a VW now after hearing that story.

VW has a poor reliability rating per Consumer Reports, as does BMW (German engineering - high performance, low reliability). They're getting better at reliability, but they don't come near Toyota/Lexus/Subaru and Honda. OTOH, I think the Japanese cars are more expensive to work on than American. But the German ones are even more expensive than the Japanese autos, I've heard.

I have been a professional mechanic for well over 20 years. I have seen every brand have problems around the 100,000 mark. Some models do better than others and some have no issue well into the 150 to 200,000 mark. I also sell around that time because you still have some resale value. I chose the Ford brand because same as you I like their trucks. I have driven about every brand out and Ford's always seem to fit me. Not knocking what everyone else's choices are at all, just like my Fords. fwiw I too think they need better styling when it comes to cars. There are a couple that are ok but nothing jumping out right now.

Glad to hear you had some good luck with Mazda's, they were part of the Ford Family for a while. Not sure who owns them now.

My dad has an Eddie Bauer 5.0 Explorer that is close to 300,000 miles. He refuses to get rid of it, even though it looks like crap!

yep my uncle has a bronco II that is up there that high also and also looks like crap

Dark blue and sky blue lol

now by no means am i crowning ford king or anything just pointing out I like them, their looks and their performance.
My explorer i wasnt even that nice to it. I will say i did all the maintenance the book told me too. But i had it off roading, drove it through a creek quite a few times, blew out all four strusts /shocks jumping it lol and it still lasted this long.

I think most vehicles will except for the lemon here and there that come off the line at 4:50 on a friday just like everything else.
Do the recommend maintenance and it should be fine.

Ahh! The Bronco II the pinkie toe of vehicles. Loved those things. My wife who was my girlfriend at the time had a tan and grey one. We beat the crap out of that thing until it finally gave up the ghost. It had 175,000 on it but had been through a few clutches.

Pretty impressed that you off road your Explorer. Those things seem to be pretty capable off road.

I race Fords and have always owned them, I guess that is why I am partial to them.

Nothing major, i dont want to over sell it
some mud bogging and trails and created many of my own and theres this spring waterfall place lots of people go to but the only way to get there is hike, ATV or off road and it involves driving though a creek. and i did that quite a bit getting stuck a couple times but never stranded and the creek isnt supper deep maybe 2 feet max in the place we cross anyway

Still impressive! I have a side by side for my off roading adventures but have had a few vehicles out in mud before. It's the adventure of it all isn't it?

oh yeah it was good times, couple times i thought i was gonna have to have someone help me but i always managed to get it out.

But the bottom line is i have no complaints about the truck at all, none. I bought new and got my money out of it for sure.

In the end that's all that matters. You like it, It's yours, and you have had good times with it. Drive her till the wheels fall off!

yep!

its the way i feel about the new escape. At first i was turned off by the nontruck look and crossover look but as soon as i drove one the turbo has so much balls for what type of vehicle it is. Supposedly the 0-60 is 6.3 and it has 270 torque and 240hp which isnt pony car or anything but in a crossover 2.0 that cant you cant beat it. I wouldnt be surprised it it does 6 flats on 97.

theres a green camero by me that i piss off often, now OF COURSE he beats me light to light and stuff like that but im just fast enough to piss him off and make him worry lol and on the highway if i can get to my governor speed first it give him problems lol

Our Edge is pretty peppy. I think its around 260hp for a smaller SUV crossover. Like you say not much beats it off the line. Not sure what the wife will get next time around, either an Explorer or another Edge I suspect. I want a Raptor real bad but $60,000 for a non diesel truck is pretty steep.

Im good on vehicles for now but id love to have a new explorer sport with the 3.5 eco boost in them

and yeah the raptor is awesome

I was actually upset they stop making the sportrac, a sportrac adrenalin with the 3.5 in it would have been my dream come true.
A sporttrac adremlin is what i would of got if they didnt stop making them.

Yeah that is a good looking truck there. We looked at an adrenaline quite a while back. Really liked them but it wouldn't haul the trailer I use for my ATV so we had to pass and get the F150.

The trailer I had at the time was a 24 foot enclosed cargo trailer. I believed it weighed about 7000# empty. By the time we put our gear and atv's in it would have been way over. Unless you have a huge crazy trailer you should be fine. I sold the trailer a couple years ago and downsized to a smaller one.

ooooh yeah i dont have anything crazy like that I got a little guy for to haul a tractor with extra room and stuff like that as a matter of fact id never be hauling more a tractor or two atvs

Your good then. That truck is more than capable for that. The trailer I had was my old race car trailer. It was paid off so I didn't want to have to buy another one. I ended up doing that anyway. Oh well.

I rented an Edge on a trip and was VERY impressed by it.

I remember there is a model of VW that the window switches tend to go out just after warranty, and it is about $500 to replace just one. That got around and think hurt VW sales alot. Their new "beetle" also earned a reputation of being very unreliable. BMWs used to be known of outrageously expensive maintenance and repair costs. Taurus sales fell dramatically years ago when it learned they have bad transmissions (that go out after warranty). Mercedes now is earning a reputation of outrageous maintenance and repair costs that are hurting them. I really like top-end Mercedes, but don't recommend them to anyone for costs of maintenance and repairs.

:2wave: Learned that one the hard way.

One thing that I don't care for regarding newer trucks, both Ford and Chevy/GM, is that they're too tall. I'm 5'-8", which is very average, and have a hard time reaching into the bed to access stuff. I had a 2002 F150 for several years and it was lower than the current models and it was perfect.

well i hope they bring it back and maybe one day ill get one
I also hope they bring some type of ranger back

they have one in Australia and people (car mags) seem to love it but for now its not planned to come here.

A ranger with the some type of new ecoboost though would be awesome

right now they have the 1.6, 2.0 and 3.5 out supposedly they are supposed to have 3 more out?????
and the 1.6 is getting revamped to a 1.5 and it had some issues.

so maybe a 3.0(Ranger) and a 4.0(type of mustang) ?????? that would crazy.

Heres the ford ranger in aussyland
