In my opinion, this is the best time to be alive in human history, on an overall level. Obviously if you look at specific people or countries, you can say it's worse now (such as comparing Syria now to Syria 5 years ago), but on a global scale this is the best year ever. This video made by the BBC statistically demonstrates this:

Hans Rosling's 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes - The Joy of Stats - BBC Four - YouTube

Basically, never before have so many people had such a long lifespan and such a high standard of living. The income figures shown are in real terms, meaning they adjust for inflation. The reason I am making this a poll is because there seems to be a fallacy (in my opinion) that a lot of people have today that life was somehow better back in the '50s and '60s. People have this illusion of a golden era. I say it's just nostalgia goggles, and that we humans are much much better off than ever before.

not in the slightest.

The best time for anyone to be alive is whenever that particular person thinks is the best time, not when someone tries to convince them is the best time.

It's too bad this obvious rule of thumb has been subordinated to Liberal political demands that all other times in American history were bad because America is a bad, bad country needing many Liberal improvements.

BEST TIME TO BE ALIVE WAS BEFORE THAT OBUMMER GOT ELECTED.

lol :2wave:

I think the best time to be a kid growing up was in the 1950's. But that was the time I grew up in so that probably has a lot to do with it.

Late 50s early 60s had the best music that's for sure and you didn't have to worry about being mugged or raped or abducted as a child.

No you didn't. It was a time when we left the house, we never locked the door. When we went to town, in the summer time we left the windows open and never locked the car. The only crime we had was some kid stealing a watermelon out of a neighbors field. Crime was a big city problem. At least that was how we looked at it.

If I got to decide which time in human history I would be born but I didn't know where it would be or what status I'd be born into, I would choose right now. So by that standard I'd say yes.

It might not necessarily be nostalgia goggles. For middle class Americans back then vs today I could see the argument. I do think quality of life had improved since the 50s substantially in most places though.

It is for me. This is when I was meant to be alive, though since I was a kid I felt like tech is dragging behind what I need.

For some...

But you did have to worry about being sent off to war.

I agree. I am still waiting for the Star Trek style transporter. The only waaaaay to go.

It's quite obvious, of course it is.

Regardless of what ever time, there will be those who do not benefit. Who are put upon and treated as second class citizens. For me being born and raised on a farm, a family farm, life was ideal. You had to go to the city to see things like your pic. I think that says a lot about city folk vs. country. We had a couple of black families, Negro back then live close by who had their farms. We would lend and use each other equipment, plows, pickers, cultivators, wagons, balers etc. Working and sharing together helped us all and saved us money. They was good friends of us. But all that changed when one went into the cities. City folk were down right mean. Whereas we didn't have crime and left our doors unlocked when we went places, one didn't do that in the city and it didn't matter what color. City folk have no respect.

the nostalgia of the 50-60's is in part due to the lack of reporting of bad things happening.

Kids were abducted, they were abused, but it was not reported on the news. It was hushed up and kept quite

Crime has gone up from the 50s in the US, but in Canada you can still drive with your doors unlocked (other then the fact they lock automatically now. My door to my condo is unlocked when I am at home and my patio is open as well. When I was in a house it was open as well. A significant aspect of the fear of crime today in the US is media driven fear.

So in my opinion today is the best time

Technology is great, the environment in the west is better generally, in China were the environment is much worse, the other aspects of living has gone up drastically

Well there was that, yeah.

I judge time by the cars and '59 to '69 was the best decade for cars, the most exciting.

Unfortunately, the Young men that should have been enjoying the big engine small body cars were sent off to war, so it is not a 100%, "yeah let's go back to that time"

If we could have had the cars without the war, it would have been the best.

If the possibility of being forcibly sent to war is the criterion for the best time to live then it would have to be after the draft ended in 1973 or before it started in 1940. In that scenario I would choose the pre draft era.

EDIT: some cool cars then too!

I think the cars sucked before 1940 and definately after 1973.

1973 was the last real car.

The governemtn started getting involved and forced the car companies to make crappy cars.

For example the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado with the 500 CI engine put out 375 horsepower.

The same 500 CU engine in the 1975 model put out 195 I believe. The 195 can't power that huge car but the government forced car companies to improve fuel economy so that is what we got.

Any time of being alive is preferable to the before and after alternative. Enjoy it while you can!

It all depends on who you are and where you live.

I wouldn't say that the best time to be alive is right now, in this particular year ,but certainly it is in this time-frame of the past, say, 15 years. So the past generation or less than a generation is the best time to be alive. And 20 years from now ,the best time to be alive will be from the then and the past generation.

Depends on where you are in your own personal life cycle. If you're young and getting laid for the first time - you betcha!
