You are putting all republicans in the same basket. Not all republicans put their religion into everything when it comes to politics. Most truly conservative republicans know when an issue is political or when its religious.

I think the GOP has made its defining principles known. They are pro-Christian, anti-immigration, pro-life, anti-drug, anti-taxes, pro-traditional marriage. Any Republican who veers from any of those positions has to explain themselves. The only difference between the establishment and Tea Party wings is a matter of intensity and tactics.

Saying not all Republicans are the same is technically true but in general is kind of a dodge.

HOw Does Senator Collins and Governor Christie fit into your pigeon holing? My GOP senator is pro gay rights. Do you claim all democrats have to be anti Christian, Pro illegal immigration, anti life, pro drug, pro taxes, and anti traditional marriage or explain themselves?

Like I said, watch those few examples plead their cases to the GOP majority over the next few years.

I would put it a bit differently.

Democrats are the party of massive, national government.
Establishment Republicans are the party of a somewhat smaller, but still massive, national government.
Constitutional Conservatives are the party of the private sector.

Gay marriage and it isn't even close IMO.

Although I would say that after Immigration that's the one where they have the most movement as of late.
