Should Obama butt in changing the name of the Washington Redskins?

Again, that is YOUR choice and I understand that. However, that is not the reality. If a president did that, they would be toast by ANY STANDARD. I don't doubt YOU think that way, but the majority don't. Sorry but to the majority, Venue IS the standard.

That is not reality. If the president did as I said, the president would be lauded for taking a moral stand

Professionalism is a standard of behavior, not a venue

I say put that to the test and find out what happens. You would be SORELY disappointing. There is a reason a president hasn't done what you stated. They would be toast.

Yeah, it will be the first thing I do as soon as I get elected president

My understanding is he got asked about it during an interview and shared his opinion. That's not butting in. If he was actively involving himself in the situation, then we could call it butting in, but simply voicing an opinion when asked about it, that's pretty normal.

I don't understand the mindset that freaks out about these tiny, negligible non issues. Who cares what Obama's opinion is on the team name for the Redskins? Who cares how many rounds of gold he plays a month? If you want to criticize Obama, stick to things that matter.

Hey! As long as he's giving opinions on things, right?

I am thinking we have enough problems facing this country so should the President butt in?

I pulled a switcheroo from my usual seriousness and said yes. Get Obama involved in this decision. He is clearly a sports-savvy president, and it's not like anything else he's doing with his time is doing us much good. Plus he's multi-racial, which clearly qualifies him to make a judgment about what qualifies as offensive.

I say we give the president full authority to change the name of this football team to anything of his choosing.

Up for consideration:
- The Washington Lobbyists
- The Washington Demand-Side Economists
- The Washington Altruists
- The Washington Yesmen

So you think that is more important then handling the economy, unemployment, foreign policy, etc?

No, and neither does he. The questioner thought it was, though.

I think you're mixing up the concept of a professional President and a professional politician (understandable since the politicians have long conflated the two). The professional politician does indeed do (or not do) whatever is required to get elected. A professional President does what is right regardless of electability.

I don't think you've had a professional President in my lifetime (not that our Prime Ministers have been any better).

Apparently one of the most active and vocal groups cares because they have taken President Obama's opinion as a catalyst for a renewed effort. They view it as an endorsement of their position and are attempting to exploit it to their advantage. THIS is exactly why a sitting President should be cautious when expressing opinions on non-government and non-official mattrers, even when/if asked directly.
