I know how low the esteem is here for anecdotal evidence. Still, it's what I have available:)

I've always been amazed by social smokers and casual opiate users. My own Sister was a casual smoker, only one in the evening. OTOH I stole a cigarette from as camp counselor at the age of 12 and promptly became addicted. 58 years later and if they hadn't invented E-cigs, I'd still be an addict. I suppose I still am, just a cleaner and more convenient one. The odds will not be in your favor. That's why the tobacco industry is so huge and profitable despite government interference and that's why on a freezing day in a city, you'll see smokers freezing and smoking at the same time.

As for opiates, I'll agree that most people can take prescribed pills as directed. So, after a surgery, you can take your 2 or 3 10/350 Percocets for a week and then never take another one. You might feel crappy the day after you stop but yes, you should be alright. OTOH, crush up an Oxy 80 or some Mexican Tar and snort or inject it, your story may not have such a happy ending.

I didn't get addicted after one smoke, but I certainly got addicted eventually.

I hear you on the grip it can have and the amazement at social smokers and casual opiate users. Lucky bastards.
