The possible issue is that it could divide the Republican Party's numbers at the polls; perhaps not as large as the Progressives in 1912, but a sizable portion nonetheless. This would be the Democrat's gain, but it could also allow Republicans the chance to figure out a better pecking order. My preference is just that you pressure the Tea Partiers to stay silent and marginalized, with the more persistent types being forced to choose the Libertarian Party or the Constitution Party. You then work to moderate the tendencies of the passive or malleable Tea Party types so that they become a bit more tolerating of the establishment.

Agreed. The Tea Party wouldn't want to be a third party as they wouldn't do very well as a third party. Nobody does well as a third party. Now, if they could take over the Republican party and get the more central Republicans out they'd love that. Let's get rid of the RINO!

Despite the odds, third parties do stick around. It's probably a pretty cushy life, like winning 2nd prize in the lotto. Politics are a business as much as a lifestyle. So, it's not impossible.

Oh, I'm sure the party could stay around for a long time as a third party. Look at the libertarians for example. But they have no shot at winning the presidency or most political offices. Look at the last libertarian president.

Should the Tea Party break away from the Republicans and form an official political party?

They do not have to form another Party. They could back an existing Third Party like the Constitutional Party or New Wig Party.

Also they do not have to break away from the Republican Party since they are doing rather well in driving the Republican Party in a direction they want to go.
