I believe it's extremely important.

But our President, Barack Obama doesn't. In fact Obama already announced what the main mission of NASA will be from now on. Reaching out to the Muslims world.

NASA Chief: Move Out Of The Way Startrek, Next Frontier Better Relations With Muslim World

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his "foremost" mission as the head of America's space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.

Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA's orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.

First, when you link something from Fox I just roll my eyes. Second, while I agree that Space funding is essential and Barack Obama is damaging it by under funding it, I wouldn't say that all he looks to do is reach out to Muslims. Have you seen his drone usage, his willingness to get involved in every middle eastern country possible, his clear disregard for human (including Muslim) life?

All the stuff we dig up the earth for, most of it at least is there in space, in large quantity. And has been mentioned, it's the only way the species is going to survive long term.

Heya CB :2wave: .....yep that's what that mining company was saying. Although I haven't heard to many mention gold being in any asteroids. Course gold is used for shielding like with most ships and the space station.

Fox News is a very reliable source. Fox News has had to retract less news stories that CNN, NBC, CBS and ABC.

I did try to use the BBC story but was having problems of opening the entire page.

What the article is really saying, that Obama is using NASA for social engineering.

Have you been on the Department of Homeland Security website ? Yep, Obama is using the DHS for social engineering. The DHS is pushing food stamps on their website. Telling foreigners, terrorist and illegal aliens how to apply for food stamps.

This is a DHS website. If you don't believe me, look at the left hand bottom of the website. ->WelcometoUSA.gov | Government Benefits

Homeland Security promotes welfare to new immigrants in government ‘welcome’ materials

>" Ask not what you can do for your country, but what your new country can do for you.

“Welcome to USA.gov,” a website maintained by the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), bills itself as the “primary gateway for new immigrants to find basic information on how to settle in the United States” — featuring a prominent section for new immigrants about how to access government benefits..."<

In the name of jebus apache ratty will this destruction and disrespect of our nation ever be overturned?
or are we destined to continue down this road to lawd knows what?
Wait weren't we supposed to be reaching for the stars in this thread?
Instead we find ourselves doing Moselm outreach?

that ain't no way to get to Alpha Centauri ;)

We just shot a cool new probe to the moon, but how important is space exploration to the future of America? Is there none? Do we need to get back up there?

250million to send a probe to the moon to examine its atmosphere (there isn't one). And yet we have a trillion dollar deficit, and were constantly told we cant afford to feed children and take care of veterans. I would put the priority at the very bottom. And that's before we get to the fact that space exploration isn't in the constitution, and thus illegal spending.

When you get deranged about FNC, we roll our eyes. Just accept it and move on.

So we should just perpetually live like it's 1789?

I got a movie called "The Village" you might like.

1789 heck no party like its 1999

Although I have a deep passion for space exploration, and used to be a big Star---- fan, we're broke guys. We have no money for this, and have so many problems right here. I'm not a big "throw money at it" guy, but we could really use that money to solve problems here and now. Scientific exploration is essentially the search for more problems, and we already have enough.

Here we go, the quarterly "Should We Be in Space?" debate. Space should not even be on our radar (pun intended) right now other than to manage our satellites. Mars doesn't make the debt go away if we colonize it. The space program is kinda like the extra channels you can order with the Dish Network premium package. Sure, the channels are cool, but when money gets tight its time to dump them until things pick up again.

When the millions get tired of lazy asses spending billions and they dont even have a home.........its GILLOTINE time.

101026_nickelsville.jpg

when they complain about it, we will remind them they are so smart, they cant even tell the difference between english and metric........

"NASA lost a $125 million Mars orbiter because one engineering team used metric units while another used English units for a key spacecraft operation, according to a review finding released Thursday"

That would have built 6500 very nice homes for people to live in...........

It's worth every penny and then some---and we spend very few pennies on it as it is. The funding we put into scientific research and space will pay more dividends than the enormous sums we waste at HUD or on Farm Subsidies. With minimal funding we've made huge progress in facilitating the development of an embryonic commercial space program that could vastly increase the quality of our civilization and yield untold billions. We should have accomplished so much more than we have but a combination of Cold War sensibilities, strangulating Congressional oversight, and lack of funding priority set us back decades. Now the high frontier is alive with excitement again and now is not the time to pull back.

Wrong.

We have the technology to colonize and develop our own solar system NOW!

Moreover, emphasis on exploitation and colonization of our own solar syatem would open all sorts of business and employment opportunities. For example; all the industry necessary for construction of space vehicles, colonization living modules, lunar/planetary contruction vehicles, and equipment and all the attendant technology would open up a slew of white and blue collar jobs HERE in the USA.

This effort would also open up doors to scientific inquiry leading to further advances in technology (like your fusion power idea) and fulfill most of my suggested goals.

Completely and unreservedly agree. Though Angry does have one solid point: The ISS was a terrible program and has done so much damage to public confidence about what is possible in space.

It's worth every penny and then some
and it is ONLY pennies! I'm too bored to repost the the pie chart that shows NASA budget is only like .07% of the Federal budget... Heck we could trim 10% off the 4 largest entitlement programs, chuck that into NASA's budget appoint someone to lead it that didn't have 'outreach' as a mission goal and in less than five years be getting daily morning show broadcasts from the colony on Mars ;)

That's why private industry is getting involved. Then both can piggy back each other. We can't just keep relying on satellites either. Already some have been put out of commission by solar flares. Or other malfunctions.

Mining resources off asteroids and water.....will help our economy. Colonizing the Moon should come before Mars. Having a grounded satellite would be prudent rather than those just flying around in orbit.

yer gonna mine water when 75% of this planet is covered innit? heh OK

yer gonna have to dug tunnels n live underground on the moon (prolly on Mars too?)
thar's this pesky lil thang called radiation 'out thar'

neither orb has a magnetic field to shield ya but you knew that already rightie oh?

Which one ionizes yer rna/dna faster, cosmic or solar radiation?

Im not talking about satellites that are for space exploration. I'm talking about communication satellites. And I'm all for the private sector going to space.

Mining asteroids? LOL. Show me where that is producing anything besides trivial amounts of resources.

If we turn out backs now because it is hard and the returns are long-term, we may never get there at all.

If humanity has a future as a technological and advancing species, it will belong ultimately to those who conquer space and master its resources and the advanced technologies to obtain same.

Read back into the thread little. Already a company is talking about mining resources. They released in Jan of 2012. Also Water is the key issue. Which now they know asteroids have it. So that is a going to be major resource.
