So how is that "Smart Power" working out?

How is "Smart Power" working out for the United States?

So the smartest kid in the room (Barry) looks kinda dumb now
yeah everyone can see that

What?
and what is this fixation with attacking education?

Answer the bloody question: would you consult a professor or a Colonel with combat experience?

I answered that. The one who knows. You said policy decision. Colonels are largely not the best for policy. Generals neither. That said, diplomats are not best for battle strategy. You and others seem to assume there's a one size fits all situations.

Btw, many professors have often held other jobs and positions, which is why I noted few have lived their entire lives cloistered in any ivory towers.

I am unconcerned with education
what does it have with our siding with Al-Qaeda in Syria?
did he learn that at Columbia ?

We didn't do any smarter invading Iraq. Both actions are less than stellar. Neither garnered support from me. But education should not have been tossed around. It's that anti-education, anti-science, anti-thought position that really gets to me. Disagree, as do I, but make rational arguments and leave the disdain for being educated at the door.

That's what we were promised, right? Ineffectual bumbling around the Middle East was done because the smart people weren't in charge. The world wasn't a mess of incompatible national interests, difficult trade-offs, no-win situations, and irreconcilable differences, but merely a rubix cube, waiting for the Smartest President Ever to come in and Be Wonderful Enough To Solve It. Remember?
So. How's that working out?

79.17% of the folks think:
We are so screwed that we now lose no matter WHAT we do

Sometimes true, sometimes false. Professors in many fields both do and teach. Public school teachers both do and teach if you consider their primary fields to be pedagogy (as I do consider them to be primarily pedagogists) rather than science, mathematics, or social studies (etc.), but if they take pride in their knowledge in the subject matter they teach, maybe so.

So. How's that working out?

Lol, when I read the title of this thread I thought it would be about some "renewable energy - intelligent grid" stuff. :)

I clicked it thinking it was about utility meters, hey anything that lowers my electric bill has to be a good thing Right?

Very few do. That's one of a few mistakes those who attack education make.

And a wise president would consult those who process knowledge, regardless of how they gained that knowledge.

Get over it Boo, nobody is attacking education. We are attacking people that have nothing but education so don't lump yourself in with the losers, you obviously are very well rounded.

Good evening, Gimmesometruth. :2wave:

And if it is proven that the rebels were the ones using chemical weapons, would you feel the same?
Of course.
Would you justify their use by stating that they are fighting the regime, so it's okay?
No, the use by any group violates the ban.

Again, most are. That's the point. And you are attacking education.

The same arguments against "intellectual" leadership can be found in budding revolutionary fascist and communist states. Maybe they knew something that we don't.

See this is the thing about formal education taught by these liberal profs. As well rounded as you are you have bought into their elitist mindset that anyone who thinks ivory tower academics are not superior human beings must hate education. This is the downside of pursuing a higher education as taught in most of our universities, you get as much indoctrination as education or maybe even more.

Again, nonsense. I stand by what I said earlier, you don't know who is really teaching on the whole, and you're so arrogant as to think students don't have their own minds.

I'll repeat this for you:

You know that's bs. Complete bs. Take me. I've drove truck, served in the military, worked retail, waited tables, cooked, partnered in an antique shop, and worked construction. What in that is not an honest days work?

And I'm not alone.

You also have no respect for young people who work jobs, have families, and try to balance both with getting an education. You also think they don't have their own minds. How arrogant of you.

Like I said, the stuff you spew is the problem. Not education.

In this situation, I see little wrong being an elitist to anti-intellectuals.

I think I see the problem here. You desperately want to be labeled as an academic so when I say you are not one you get offended. The sad truth is these real academics will never accept you into their elitist club no matter how hard you try. To them you will always just be a truck driver with an education.

Define intellectual, so far we have been concentrating on the term "academic".

The term is under dispute. There are a couple of broad-based definitions that are fairly common.

1) A person who lives by the creation and dissemination of ideas

2) A person who is perhaps a professional in one area, but feels they can take their skill set and apply it to subject matters outside their specialty. There is often a moral certitude that imbues them.

Sounds better than an academic and the fact that they are a professional in one area means they put their intellect to work and are people that do, not people that hypothesize. They have my vote as they are defined by you.
