    Is this racist?

I posted this video on another thread, but I think it deserves its own discussion.

This is a direct, yes-or-no question: Does racism occur in this video?

Its hard to say. The first guy almost had the cops called on him by the pastor, but he may have not wanted to upset his kids on their family outing. Maybe the guy who confronted the black male would have done the same to the white male. Maybe the guy who decided not to confront the white male wouldn't have done so to the black male.

Either way, this isn't exactly a variable controlled exercise.

It's pretty comparable. It and it's been repeated in many different ways with almost exactly the same results.

I didn't review all 12 plus minutes of the video but the first 4 minutes - that said, I don't believe this is racism per se but definitely racial profiling/stereotyping.

It's unfair and hard to know if there's a racial element because we don't know the neigborhood this occured in. If this is a neighborhood where few black people live or visit, seeing a young black man act this way would be more suspicious than seeing a young white man doing the same thing - context is important.

Only in that it would tell us which group is prejudice.

I recognize the voice of John Quinones. It's "What Would You Do?".

If profiling, stereotyping, and assumption is racism...then sure.

    Yes, it's racism.

This is pretty close. For me, to be racist there needs to be an element of a feeling of racial superiority/inferiority, which is impossible to determine from what I watched of the video. AS I have commented more than once, for me racism is a term we throw around far too much. Something can be bad without being racist.

If this was a black neighborhood where whites seldom visit and the opposite scenario was presented, do you think the black people who stolled by would act any differently? I don't think it would be much of a stretch, drawing on some racial stereotypes, to suggest that if a white kid was trying to steal a bike in a black neighborhood, they wouldn't be calling the police, they'd be calling friends to participate in or watch the white guy get whooped.

My point was that the scenario presented in the video wasn't typical of places where whites and blacks intermingle - pretty much all of the people who went by were white with the exception of the three black women and then the camera guys were probably waiting all day for somebody black to go by so they could set up their story agenda.

If this was a place where lots of whites and lots of blacks walk by regularly, you'd get a far better appreciation for what part race is playing in the dynamic as opposed to what "difference" is playing in the dynamic.
