Is this racist?

Does racism occur in this video?

Not when crime statistics support the profile, Boo. When we start denying reality in the guise of political correctness, who's being stupid?

That's a huge misreading of the statistics. Any remember, they all knew the white guy was stealing. Think about that for a moment. And ask yourself this, if I assume one race does more crime, how long before the numbers match my assumption.

I don't think many people read crime statistics.

But it isn't necessarily racism because it may not be "race." It may be "different." (ie Xenophobia). For example, what if the "thief" had been a tough looking white guy with tattoos - or a 14 year old kid?

Not by race? Dressed alike, doing the same acts, with the same reactions, leaving only race? I don't see a way to excuse that.

I can appreciate that Boo.

I wish you were right on this one bro. It's like Maggie said. Sad but true. :( Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.

As they say on Dragnet, "Just the facts."

Race.

Profiling based on race doesn't = racism. The stats are indisputable.

Okay, and what were the underlying assumptions about race in that video?

So you're of the opinion that they "let" the white guy steal because he was white?

I didn't read it that way. I read it that the white guy was more ****-sure of himself. Someone with a sledge hammer? Someone with a power saw? I'm not sure I'm going to be doing much other than making a phone call. The black guy was less formidable, in my opinion. Although they said he was the same age? I think he came off as younger and less threatening.

Well, should I "thank" your post? Or poke you in the eye? ;)

Well, since we're eye to eye on this one, poking me in the eye might hurt as both. LOL!

A Thank You will suffice. ;)

Yeah, that's racist, Maggie.

No. That's not racist. Learn what racism is before you accuse others of being racist. Blacks, as a percentage, are far more likely to be thieves than whites. That's just the fack, Jack.

Of robbery arrests in 2011 (87,211), 37,906 were white; 48,154 were black. Blacks represent 13.1% of the population. Do the math if you have to. FBI — Table 43 USA QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Sixty posts about race yet the discussion is still civil?? What is this I don't even...

Oy vey, Maggie, the two people in that video were acting the same. Same dress, same dodgy behavior. Yet two entirely different reactions were given.

Now you move the goalposts?? ;)

Hang in there . . . I've just stated the obvious. ;)

Remember Maggie, truth or not, it's racist these days to discuss the reality of the situation. That's where society has come to.

I was always taught the first thing one has to do to correct their mistake was to acknowledge the mistake. Those who prefer to stick their heads in the sand only make it worse, not better.

Uh, those goalposts were created in the OP, Maggie. Are you sure you watched the video?

I replied with overwhelming statistics to your accusation that my opinion on profiling was racist. You have now changed your argument after being DiNozzo'd with statistics and shifted your argument to the video itself. I originally stated the video wasn't racist in nature, but the result of profiling. I gave you statistics to support that profiling that showed such profiling was valid based on robbery stats compiled by the FBI. Overwhelmingly so.

I responded to Boo what my thoughts were about the video itself.

If you disagree with me that it's profiling (as I opine), please stick to that subject and give us reasons for your belief that it's racist. I've given you ample evidence supporting my belief that it's profiling.

Your turn.

I posted this video on another thread, but I think it deserves its own discussion.

This is a direct, yes-or-no question: Does racism occur in this video?

You are aware you're trying to compare different individuals in different situations? If you want to claim their actions are racist, you would need to show the same individual acting differently in both situations.

Not to mention, it's a tv show

No, Maggie, that was you threadjacking. I think you were thinking about those statistics while watching that video instead of paying attention to the scenario they created. I told you what it was and then you wanted to get cute and tell me I was changing the goalposts when, as I said, that scenario was the whole point of the video. If you want to go on a rant about crime statistics that buttress your beliefs, fine, start your own thread, otherwise...this isn't the thread you're looking for.

Does this post make you feel empowered? I don't know why it would.

My opinion is that the video represents profiling, not racism. I saw the original episode in addition to watching the posted video. It was a network show some time ago.

You told me what it was?? You told me what? That it's racism? Well, glory be! I disagree!

I'm not sure she is. I bet if we assumed whites committed more crime, in time statistics would how they do.

I told you what the scenario was. Also, that scenario was explained in the video itself. Would you like me to explain it again? And profiling is not mutually exclusive to racism, as was the case here in that racism was the basis of that profiling.

Looked to me they were dressed the same, doing the exact same acts, answering with the same language ("it's not your bike is it? It will be mine. Essential stealing it.").

the second guy didn't get to the power saw because they were on him so fast.

This experiment has been done many times, many places, many conditions, and results always the same. That should at least cause pause.
