I read the article and, of course, I don't agree with her.

For one, Obama did not make this about race. It was about race, if not based on the facts of the case then certainly on the upheaval around race that it created. The racial dimensions were central to the discussion surrounding this case long before he commented.

I think this was an effort to reach out on a personal level, because in case you hadn't notice....he is a black man. I see it as an effort to humanize things. To help people who do no know the experience of racism to better understand that it is a reality. If the a black man who presents like this can still illicit those reactions from some white people then clearly we still have racial issues in this country.

I think that a needed conversation is being pushed on all the people in this country who have been trying to dodge it and they don't like it. So they scream race-baiter and accuse people of making it up. It is real and it is time.

Or maybe it was just a run-of-the-mill self defense case, as the jury eventually confirmed, and it was hijacked by people with a racial agenda. Race was not in the case; race was brought to the case.

If I had a son, hed look like Trayvon.
In so saying, he essentially gave permission for all to identify themselves by race with the victim or the accused. How sad, as we approach the 50th anniversary of the march Martin Luther King Jr. led on Washington, that even the president resorts to judging not by the content of ones character but by the color of his skin the antithesis of the great dream King articulated.
Excellent post! I wish I could give a bunch of likes for this.

(waiting for the public outcry) It was a race bait set-up in my opinion and our President, the Justice department and the Justice Brother (Al and Jessie) stoked the fire.

Even during the trial, nothing was about race, It wasn't a factor and it couldn't be proven Zim was a racist anyhow. Quite the opposite.

Let me be perfectly clear, there ARE cases of obvious racism but, in the context of a serious crime being committed, we already have laws that serve justice. The emotional baggage that race brings into the fray is unnecessary and with the case of Rodney King [for example] can turn an ordinary case of police brutality into a giant collapse of society.

    Do you follow me?
I hear you but try this on for size. Try to see things from a different perspective, not that you have to agree with it but just for the sake of understanding.

Maybe you are right, maybe some saw this as an opportunity to further their own self interests. But that does not mean that the story itself did not have racial elements. Some may have distracted, with their pomp and puffery, from the heart of a truly tragic story that we all had something valuable to learn from. The incident should not loose its relevancy because of them.

Is it possible that to people who have experienced a history of oppression and bigotry this was just the final straw. That in the context of their lives this easily appeared consistent with bigoted behavior and that maybe the take away here is what drove so many to interpret the events of that night as they did.

You're asking AJ to do what he doesn't do well.
