I'd rather have a career than be unemployed, what this is about is the fact that something even those parents who are successful in their careers and are making more money than average still can't afford daycare and something needs to be done about it.

I'm still not buying that well-paid, college educated people have trouble affording health care - let alone 2 well-paid, college educated people as a couple.

I don't know where you're getting your "information", but it's incorrect.

Ambition means you are not letting anything get in the way of your goals.
You are making excuses because your government want pay out for your kids day care.
YOU and your wife had the kids? Correct? How is it anyone elses job to pay for them?

These people are ambitious, successful, and benefiting others but they can't afford what they need to do that no matter how successful they are. Prices need to go down for daycare.

It's 20,000$+/year that's a lot of money for young adults with their relatively new careers.

Prices need to go down on lots of things. Daycare is the least of our worries.

If you pay for daycare there is more money for them to spend on other things. Daycare is a ginat expense for new parents.

Where are you getting this $20,000+ a year number from?

I keep finding discrepancy in average cost but you're numbers aren't even in the ballpark.

He already showed his hand about not working a "demeaning" job.
I guess he wants the corner office next to the CEO right off the bat.

No, child care should not be subsidized and neither should Corporations.

I am sure I will at least get banned from this thead but, here goes. Too effing bad!!!!!! Take a second job. Do it at night so no one knows you so you want feel embarassed.

Hell, sign me up for that. I'll even have a kid if that's all it takes.

I want a high-paying white-collar job and a cheap kid to raise. If I find Aladdin's lamp, what should my third wish be?

Why don't you and your wife open a daycare and charge less than the competition?

I don't believe for a second that daycare by you STARTS at $20,000 but you could make a small fortune through only charging $15,000.00 and not have to worry about daycare yourself.

:agree: Since they give children backpacks of food on Friday so they have something to eat on the weekends, what are the food stamps being used for these days? And how do they justify doing it, other than to appeal to emotion..."it's for the children"?.

You know, that's a great question. Not sure who is getting them, nor am I sure if the union prepared, school district provided, meals count against what is provided via the SNAP program.

Think about it. Government provided day care, and year round meals, from infant to H.S. graduation, and beyond. Such a thing should send chills up someones spine. It's not hard to imagine a means test, and proficiency tests administered to "participants" to prove the care has been "earned", and is "warranted".

It is better for me and better for you that we allow people to send their kids to an affordable daycare allowing their parents to get a good education and a well-paying job then having people who do not work and have to stay home.

No kidding. If day care costs twenty grand, I'm in the wrong racket. I'll gladly put away my shirt and tie and pick up a Dr. Seuss book and a box of graham crackers.

Gipper: A roast beef sandwich is better than both.

You're not paying attention. 1) People don't need to be "allowed" to do anything, because they're not being disallowed from doing anything. 2) It's not any more affordable if it's being subsidized, rather it is continuing to be bought and sold at those high, allegedly unaffordable prices.

Wrong, its better for everyone including the child to plan for children then just "oops there he is".
I will have to say, you sound like a very selfish person on this.

Also, as a social Darwinist, I'd love it if procreation was restricted to the wealthy. Crime would go down, IQ would go up, many subsidizes would be unnecessary, Affirmative Action could be lifted, and a number of other positive externalities would come about.

Forced sterilisation of poor people? F*** off.

I suspect Observer isn't quite old enough to work yet.

The idea of $20,000.00 being the starting point for daycare in Canada seems preposterous to me.

Being able to let people work is better than both.

People without kids can't work? Wow. Thanks for telling me.

See, I was under the impression that I didn't have to knock some woman up and be unable to afford her offspring to qualify for a job. I appreciate you enlightening me.

20K a year is like what? $360 a week.
I have never heard of normal daycare costing $360 a week.
