No argument there. But my question was focused on .... How to take responsibility for their lives *after* losing their job?

You don't start doing it 30 years into your life, you have to start doing it from day one. If you're that screwed up 30 years into your life, you're almost certainly a lost cause.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Assume that things were going well, living with modest means with a modest apartment, auto, bills and a modest job. Then, job lay-off or loss of work due to injury or medical condition. Then how does the person who was doing great for 30 years, take responsibility for his life?

Then they get another job. We're not talking about extreme circumstances where the economy takes a tank for a couple of years, we're talking about normal, regular economic times. People who have an education, who have job skills, who have a work ethic, can get some work, even if they have to work two jobs, to bring home the bacon. Nobody says life has to be easy but it's almost always possible. It's the people who have no job skills, who have no work history, who have no education and still have a dozen kids who are pretty much screwed.

What about in the case of medical condition or having non-transferable skills or being older than the desired job candidate?

Nonsense. People don't have kids because the government subsides them. The kind of screwing we get from the government doesn't get anyone pregnant.

But what if the parents were laid off, injured or have medical probs and are unable to work after they had their kids? The private sector should help out more. Of course, but I don't think the private sector knows/cares how many people need help.

So what would happen to these families? I think that there would be a lot of hungry, homeless families on our streets. What else might happen?
What if? IF you have a legit reason thats one thing, and I have mentioned that as well as being vested in the system.
But the abuses are what are costing millions if not billions to the US tax payer every year.
But, "I sit around on my ass and collect wic, ebt and whatever else is a hand out. No, you and your offspring can starve or start a garden to eat out of.
The OP is not someon is not someone that fits those catagories, he says he and his wife are working. But wont work "demeaning" jobs. And seems like wont take a second job either.
I have no sympathy for that.
