Which is still remembered and talked about?

Undoubtedly Jesse Owens, but i don't think it won the war or otherwise atoned for having the olympics there. That's just my take on it.

He doesn't have to listen to anyone. It's not their call, it's his. When you go in the name of the USA at this level, that's how it works.

WRONG. He is a President he is NOT a King. When a President makes such a decision he must weigh such factors into consideration. He must weigh the cost to the outcome. and in this case the outcome does not even come close to the cost.

China and England didn't threaten our athletes. You are blaming the wrong country.

Our athletes are not threatened. If anything, only a fine would be imposed. The law is primarily aimed at any the media, and people using the media.

He doesn't have to do anything. He likely will but he doesn't have to. If he decides to take no input, and that's not like him, that's his call. So is not going.

It really doesn't matter, the threat is there and that's not how the games are played.

Not so long ago is still too damn long ago to have our athletes threatened just for being openly gay.

How young are you? If you are under 30 I could understand idealism is motivating you but still this is not that big of a deal. Russia will come around in time as the old people have to die off and younger people rise in their society.

Under 30? God, I wish. 30 from here looks like 1910.

The requirements are the same, come to the games but don't be who you are. That's not the American Way.

So?

If yu are unwilling to accept a different nations laws of public conduct, the don't go. Just that simple.

Now here's a thought. Petition the Olympic committee to give Russia an ultimatum. Amnesty to foreign visitors with Olympic passes or athletes, or else the games will be done in a different country. I would go along with this.

However, to try to force other athletes not to compete, for your cause...

I'm sorry. That's seems outright evil to me.

If you read back far enough you will discover that I said move the games, and if you can't, stay home.

the American way should be freedom
You are a walking hypocrite.

You want everyone else, to sacrifice their freedom, or have the government deny them their place to compete in the Olympics, so that you can make a stand for freedom?

My God...

Do you even realize what you are saying?

He's on your side, LOL! Nice though, and noted.

As long as the gay athletes do not kiss each other outside the Olympic village then they do not have to worry about that.

Hard to say if that's the case. The law is to protect minors from seeing gay propaganda. We only have news reports to tell us what we know, unless someone reads Russian and look up the bill. I looked, but there isn't an English translation available. My understand is it is only the media and people using the media that can be jailed. How this all can be construes... no way of knowing unless someone fluent reads the law.

That said... I do not trust what the media says to be completely accurate.

You are incorrect. Integration, women voting, the end of slavery. Get used to it.
Yes, and our law is by majority rule. The majority changes our laws.

Did you know this law passed in Russia by something like 468 to 0...

Maybe you should get used to the facts.

This is not about feelings. It's about taking a stand for what's right. The American Way, remember that old thing?

And how do you feel when very few are going to stand with you?

Maybe you should learn why the Founders feared and hated Democracy? It's why we aren't one.

It won't ruin their lives. No one lives or dies because their nation doesn't go. It's a broken heart, not a dead heart.

Now You are engaging in drama. No it is not death but having the opportunity to go after ones dream be dashed only for an impotent protest by an impotent President is a heart-wrenching thing to have done to a person. You are begining to worry me. I think you really do not understand other peoples feelings. I ask that you inwardly contemplate just what you are trying to do.
