Too bad they didn't have solid attachments to the commercial banking system.

On the other hand, how many hundreds of billions of taxpayer money did the other banks get?

Why are you saying that like its a justification?

Bailouts was just paying for your own impoverishment, if you got robbed by a group of people, would you really let them off cause you think one of the robbers was a nice guy?

What are you talking about? A justification for what? Which "nice guy"? You need to rephrase.

You rephrased it for clarity, but initially came off like you were saying that because other banks received bailouts that it was not so bad.

Come on liberals. Ya'll need to get behind this in a big way.

If we can send millions of dollars to practically half the countries in the world; if we can bail out Wall Street, we can certainly bail out Main Street....

Nope...let the state deal with it. Their problem and the rest of the state ought to feel the pain. This isnt a case where some hurricane or tornado caused some unforeseeable tragedy. This is a nightmare that has been decades in the making. The city shouldnt go down in flames, but the right people ought to be tasked to fix the problem. Maybe Michael Moore and some of the rich liberals that bitch about how unfair it is there is such a wealth disparity should offer up their personal fortunes and fix the mess. Maybe invite a few hundred people to live on the estate.

Yeah, but there was some value in doing those other things, presumably in terms of foreign good will and influence and economic stability.

What do we gain from Detroit? Votes for Democrats, I guess, and the Democrats had those votes anyway.

Detroit, not that long ago, was a great city... Manufacturing took flight overseas.....With some private and public investment, some incentives, etc. it could be a great city again.....Detroit has as much value as Chicago, New York City, Miami and Los Angeles or it could if it was revitalized.......

Didn't we try bailing them out once? Didn't Obama say he saved Detroit from Bankruptcy? How is that working out for him?

He's saving up for bailing out Chicago, which has extremely large unfunded debts.

Um....bankruptcy...is the shedding of responsibility.

Agree. It is most certainly true in this case where it is being disputed (penions may not be in as bad shape as Orr and friends claim). I think it will be nothing more than a heist if we allow the hedge funds to come in and make hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of investments in municipalities.

There should not be any "bailout" option. The city government created this mess and if the citizens want to save their city it is up to them it do it themselves.

Ah, you forget they did not elect Orr. He was place there and they have zero say what decisions the dictator makes.

I didn't forget anything. He was appointed as emergency manager by the Governor because the elected officials had screwed things up so badly they needed state help to try to dig themselves out. Kevyn Orr did not create the mess which took decades to develop, he's simply trying to figure ways to fix it. Has limited options to do so. Still no excuse to bail the city out. Nor declare bankruptcy.

The city has assets, start selling them off. The city has a population of 700,000, get them involved in figuring out how to fix their city. Shrink the borders, reduce city services, etc. etc. and Viola! Job done.

First, I'm glad to see you are not promoting a bankruptcy. My point is Orr makes all the decisions so if he decides to privatize the water and sewerage dept. how are people going to have any kind of sway in fixing public infrastructure when it is no longer in public hands? It becomes another notch in the belt for profiteers and the public virtually has no say in how it is run.
