Televised court cases: Good idea or bad idea?

Televised court cases: Good idea or bad idea?

Now that we have had a couple decades of televised court cases from which to judge (no pun intended), is it a good idea or a bad idea to allow them to be televised?
If you claim sexual harassment to be wrong, yet you defend anyone on your side for any reason,
then you are a hypocrite and everything you say on the matter is just babble.

Bad idea, the public just simply can't handle it.

I do not think trials should be televised as it forces all of them to be actors, plus exposes witnesses to public notoriety including visibly that they should not have to endure, be endangered by or deal with. People can be highly intimidated by cameras too. I would be hesitant to come forward at a witness on any civil or criminal matter if the result was I would then be televised.

They are a great idea, ALL public hearings of ANY sort should be televised and available to the public - but only through the C-SPAN network. The for pay networks should not be able to carry them. Oh, and someone do us all a favor and kick that abomination Nancy Grace right in the crotch.

As handled by the networks, no, no, and heyall no! It isn't the court or the trial so much as it is the media circus. Simply broadcasting the trials from courtroom cameras much as C-Span does with hearings, committees, etc. on the Hill would be best. But that isn't going to happen.

Americans want drama and they are way too damned lazy to interpret and sort information out for themselves. Straight reality doesn't work for America. Americans want broadcast infotainment with pretty people acting as if they were unbiased as they present selected information emphasized for effect (or completely unreported for the same reason). Reality for Americans has to be packaged, predigested and buffered before Americans will buy it. Sadly Americans want to be told what to think and how to feel - and that is the bottom line.

Excellent idea. The more light we shine on our justice system the better.

Every single time Nancy Grace opens her mouth the 4th Estate dies a small death.

This is a very good point. The witnesses should have the right to privacy without having to take extra measures to request it.

This makes me wonder how a court becomes aired on TV anything and if there aren't kickbacks involved for the person who has the legal authority. I **** as hell wouldn't want anything in my life - my death or my children's death, etc, to become a media freakshow.

Re: Televised court cases: Good idea or bad idea?

I think it's a good idea because it allows people to see how criminal cases actually work which allows the public to gauge whether or not it is working effectively for it. I would prefer that media coverage of cases be more intellectual than sensational, however.
